Exploration Complexes are combat sites found through scanning, they are an "Unknown" cosmic signature. They vary in difficulty from frigates up to battleships, but the most difficult type found in high-sec is for battlecruisers. They have a chance of starting an escalation (called expeditions in your journal) that may lead to deadspace item drops.
