The University and War
EVE University's role as a teaching corporation for EVE Online gives other players the impression that it is a corporation of players weak in PvP. This leads to occasional war declarations on EVE University for a variety of reasons, all of which mean one thing for E-UNI members; restrictions on missioning and mining, and prohibition on hauling.
This is according to the Wartime Standard Operating Procedures (WSOP) and because, for many players, the impression of being weak at PvP is mostly right. We do not wish to give the war targets opportunities for easy kills. These policies are to protect us from being picked off by hostile war targets hunting for mission runners, haulers, miners and the like, so dissuading corporations from declaring war on us, since there will be no such easy kills.
All that said, EVE University grants all members the opportunity of dropping from EVE University during war, so as to continue with PvE activities without increased risk. You will still have access to most of the resources of EVE University to such an extent that you may wonder if you have even left! This page will go into detail about how this process works, how to re-enter EVE University once you are ready and what access you'll lose when you leave for the war.
Your Choice...
So we've been war-dec'd... don't panic! This happens off and on, and you can expect it to happen in the future. But for now, you have a few choices to make:
- Stay in the university and fight the good fight; join in some fleet PvP with your fellow unistas! Yarr!
- Stay in the university and "station spin" for the large majority of the time, perhaps learning the details of Station Trading. Or play on a hauling alt or mining alt (on indeed any other sort of alt) while your main remains in the university.
- Drop from the university and continue enjoying PvE activites like missioning, hauling, mining and tons of other fun ISK-making stuff!
The Benefits of Staying During Wartime
If you are a very new player and are thinking of dropping, you may want to read the following forum post, written by Butane Bob on his impression about the effect a war can have on new players. It tries to give a little insight on the other side of the coin - the 'benefit' a war can have for an EVE University student.
Hi and Bye Forum post 10/3/11 - by Butane Bob
Whilst I totally respect the decision of anyone wishing to leave the Uni for the coming war (or any other war for that matter) - I would request that any new player who has not had previous war experience to read this before making their mind up
I joined Eve Uni back in 2009 - my own experience of Eve at the time had been doing the tutorials, a bit of mining and running a few level 1 missions. I joined the Uni hoping to learn more about the crazy Universe that is New Eden. However within a couple of days of doing so the Uni was war dec'd and I was forced to sit in the station and twiddle my virtual thumbs (or so I thought at the time). Due to my utter frustration at not being able to play my game I dropped from the Uni and soon after left Eve completely feeling that there was no way I could ever get myself up the horrendous learning curve without the Uni's help.
Towards the end of last year I resubbed - jumped back into the Uni after 3 weeks patiently waiting in the queue, and lo and behold found myself straight back into another war. I decided this time to observe more carefully what was going on.
I had previously had no idea about war fleets forming, that during wartime it is crucial to keep an eye out for alliance chat going flashy, and what x'ing up was all about. I had not waited long enough to find out previously and what a mistake this had been. What I actually discovered was that wartime is a fantastic opportunity to learn about arguably the most exciting aspect of Eve Online i.e. fleet based PvP. You really need to know very little at all to take part, but it is well worth it.
Here is a rough guide:
1. Explain in corp chat that you are a new player and can you please have a frigate and the modules to fit it out for tackling - don’t worry if you don’t even know what this means! (essentially stopping the enemy warping away, like the root/mezz/stun mechanic in fantasy mmo's, and can be done successfully with very little in the way of skills – for a more detailed guide search for tackling in the wiki)
2. Watch for the alliance chat tab flashing. Have a look in alliance - you should see something like this - 'scouts convo me please', nothing for 5 minutes, 'leadership x up' a few x's and a strange series of numbers will appear - at some point after this there will be a call for tacklers to 'x up' - put an x in alliance chat followed by t (for tackler) and frig (for frigate) i.e. type x t frig
3. You should then be invited to a fleet and when you accept will be placed in a new chat window (fleet chat) - ask in fleet chat which mumble channel to join and then await further instructions. You should then be invited to another chat window for your squad.
4. A few minutes later you will be asked to warp to the POS - don’t worry if you don’t know where this is, just ask - once you have got there you can bookmark it for future excursions
5. Await further instructions, and proceed to enjoy your new career as a full time Uni wartime pilot - as the adrenaline builds at this point you will be so glad you didn’t drop so you could carry on mining, I can assure you
The Benefits of Leaving During Wartime
The most obvious benefit is the simple one - you can continue unrestricted PvEing! Be it missioning, or mining, or hauling, or exploration, whatever it is you enjoy doing on your own, you can continue doing it during war if you drop out of E-UNI.
Now, you might be thinking that because you have left the corporation, you will lose all access to various benefits and programs and fun stuff. Not so, I say! Take a look at all the cool benefits of EVE University you will still have access to whilst you have left for the war...
- Our in-game chat channels - Chat.E-UNI, Missions-E-UNI, Industry.E-UNI, Exploration.E-UNI. You can still take part in the discussions here, ask your questions of many experienced pilots and find friends who may join you for missions, wormholes or whatever else you get up to.
- Our forums. Although some of the War & PvP related sections will no longer be accessible, the majority of our forums you can still access and take part in the discussions.
- Classes! All our classes are attendable even if you have left for the war. The Class.E-UNI chat channel is open to you, and our Mumble voice server is also open to you to listen to classes. Since you won't be in the university, you can take a look at the upcoming classes on our external calendar here: http://calendar.eveuniversity.org/.
- And you can always listen to our past recorded classes (though admittedly the world and it's dog can listen to our recorded classes; you don't need to be a member of E-UNI to do so).
- Although to apply for a Mentor you must be actually in the University, if you later drop out your Mentor will still talk to you! We don't abandon our newbies just because they don't want to PvP (which is not for everyone).
It might be shorter to list what you actually do lose access to...
- Most of our new player reimbursement programs, such as Skillbook Reimbursement, Corp Hangar access, the Ship Replacement program, PYOS and BYOM ship-building programs and the Mining Loaner fleet.
- War, ILN and some PvP forum and chat channels.
- The ability to join PvP fleets with the University.
- That's it!
If You Have Made Up Your Mind on Dropping for Wartime
For the purposes of this guide, let's say you do drop for war. Please note that wars on average last for about 8 days but could end either sooner (if the corporation that initiated war drops the declaration before the seventh day) or could continue into another week if the initiating corporation renews the declaration (paying the fee again to extend it). Corporations can indefinitely renew a war as long as they want to keep paying CONCORD for it, which can quickly become a drain for the kind of corporations which typically attack the Uni.
If you still want to drop for the war, follow these easy steps:
Drop Roles with the Corporation
If you're an EVE University member with the Freshman title or higher, you have roles within E-UNI that you need to drop before you can leave. In order to do this right-click on your character in any chat window, select the "Quit Corporation?" sub-menu and select "Remove all roles and grantable roles?". If this item is not present, you do not need to drop any roles and may instead select "Confirm quit corporation" but first, please follow the step below. Dropping roles will take 24 hours and all war declarations go through a 24 hour "warm up" period before the corporations can engage each other, so ideally you do this during the warmup period, losing the minimum amount of time from your money-making. During these 24 hours you can continue on to the next step.
Post a Goodbye (No longer required)
We used to ask that members make a goodbye post (on the Hi and Bye Forum) when leaving for war and hello post when returning. That is no longer required. A good-bye post is only suggested when you move on from the Uni. Hello posts only need to be made when initially joining the Uni or when returning after a long absence.
The Actual Drop
Now, for the real thing. Once you have completed the above steps you're ready to drop from EVE University for the war. Once you're sure that you're ready, all you have to do is right click again on your character in any chat window and choose the submenu "Quit Corporation?" and click the confirmation option. It's as easy as that and once you've left EVE University you will be enrolled in your empire's default corporation, where no other corporation can declare war on you.
Can I join another player corporation whilst out of corp for war?
Yes! Feel free to join another corp during wartime, for social or fleet activities or simply for tax avoidance purposes (NPC corps have a rather painful 11% tax rate). However bear in mind that whilst out of corp you are still a member of EVE University - in spirit if not in actual game mechanics - and so the Code of Conduct in our EVE University Rules still apply to you. Similarly, you should not be joining a corp that indulges in activities that would normally be forbidden whilst in EVE University, e.g. pirate/griefing corps, merc corps.
To find a suitable corp, you can look on our Work Fair forum, or alternatively simply ask in Chat.E-UNI; lots of long-time unistas have alt corps with very low - or zero - tax rates ideal for missioning. The best ones will not state the name in the channel (for security), and will talk to you privately on their E-UNI character (for reassurance that they really are a unista alt corp) to organise joining. Alternatively, create your own alt corp!
Remember that when it comes to rejoin E-UNI again, if you have been given roles or titles you will need to drop them 24 hours before rejoining. Speaking of which, let's show you how to rejoin E-UNI after the war is over!
Of course, you could re-join before the war is over if you wanted to join in the fight. To do so, follow the steps in the next section.
Rejoining after War
It is worth mentioning how to check when any war is coming to an end. There are three simple methods, in order of decreasing accuracy...
- This forum post describes how to check whether any Alliance or Corporation is currently at war.
- The DEFCON status in the Chat.E-UNI message of the day.
- Ask anyone in Chat.E-UNI.
Asuming we are no longer at war, let's get you started again with getting back into the University now that the war has been cancelled by CONCORD. Please note that once a war declaration has become invalid, there is another 24 hour "cool down" period where corporation members can still fight each other (this is why wars last 8 days, rather than 7). So after those extra 24 hours have passed, it is finally safe to join EVE University again.
NOTE: If you want to rejoin more than 30 days after the end of a war, you need to reapply as a standard applicant to EVE University.
Re-joining is simple. All you have to do is:
- Re-join the E-UNI chat channel (the public "E-UNI" channel, not the internal university "Chat.E-UNI" which you will probably still be in already).
- Join the interview queue, and fill out the questionaire with "Rejoining after a war". Select "I am re-joining after sitting out a war" from the dropdown list and press Submit. This will bring you to the attention of the Personnel Department staff much sooner and get your application processed more quickly.
- Apply to EVE University in-game just as you did when you first joined.
- Keep an eye on the E-UNI channel where our Personnel Officers will call your name (usually fairly swiftly) to process your re-application.
- Once back in, reply to your "dropping for war" forum post (assuming you made one), letting us know you're back.
- There is no six!
- If you find you still can't see all the correct forum section, click this (using the ingame browser) to update your forum access level.
- Always double-check that the fighting has stopped before resuming PvE activities after a war.
It's as easy as that!
Well, almost. You will need to reapply for any titles that you previously had (although this should be no problem, per se, you will indeed be in the current queue for that title). Also, please note that time spent outside E-UNI doesn't count as 'time served' for the purpose of qualifying for a title.
