Class Information
This chapter contains the standard information of this class pertaining to scheduling and class contents. The General Information should be sufficient to create a proper class topic for scheduling on the Eve University forum. Additional information relevant to the teacher is listed under Notes for the Teacher.

This is a practical, live fire exercise to understand gunnery and propulsion mod math and how to use it to your advantage.
- Duration: 1.5 hours
- Location: Meet at the UNI POS
Teaching Goals
- to understand the effect of transversal on being hit
- to learn how to close with a larger gunship
- to learn how not to close with a larger gunship
- to understand the uses and drawbacks of afterburners vs MWDs
Student requirements:
- Mumble registration and access - make sure you have Mumble sorted out and operational well before the class begins. Use this guide for set-up: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Mumble
- Access to the Class.E-UNI in-game chat channel
- E-UNI membership
- A rookie ship (noobship), with Afterburner and civilian gun fitted and Microwarpdrive available. You may need a Micro Auxiliary Power Core to fit the AB, and will for the MWD. Bring spares. The teacher will have more available.
- Red vs Blue overview setup
Additional information: This class is a practical exercise performed in space, including Q&A.
Notes for the Teacher
Required materials:
- Class.E-UNI chat channel, to receive questions and post relevant links
- Supply of AB 1, MWD 1, and MAPC modules. Place about 30 of each in a container 150+km off the station.
- If possible, have more than one instructor, in various sizes of ship (BS vs BC/Cr, fit for range).
Preparation:
- Before class, figure out the tracking ability of the instructors' ships vs noobships (sig 45-49). It's useful to know the 50% hit chance and 20% hit chance options.
Class setup:
- everyone flies to convenient system, fits one AB, and puts rest in station. Fredagod is good choice, due to 3 stations one jump from Aldrat.
- "instructors" fly BC or BS fitted with heavy long range guns (beam lasers?), stationary in space at convenient point near station.
Class Contents
Introduction
Welcome to this class on Transversal and Tracking!
This course is designed primarily for newer players interested in understanding how the gunnery math works in practice, and how to apply it in your favour.
Over the hour or two, we shall fly around and experience how to improve your chances of hitting, and of not being hit.
(Instructor should then introduce himself or herself - covering relevant experience level and background.)
We have a few ground rules for this class:
- Please put your Mumble settings on "Push to Talk" if you have not already done so.
- Feel free to type any questions in the Class.E-UNI chat channel as we proceed - I will try to answer your questions as they come during the class. [At the end of my lecture, we'll open Mumble for any further questions or general discussion.]
- You will need to be in a noob ship in Aldrat.
Everyone ready? OK, then - let's begin....
Exercise 1: basic transversal
- orbit instructors at (say) 40km with AB running. Instructors attempt to shoot frigs, missing.
- turn off ABs but keep orbiting. Notice difference in hit chance.
- now turn on ABs and approach target ships directly. Dock pods for more noobships.
Exercise 2: basic transversal (MWD)
- fit MWDs
- one frig sits in space with MWD off. Note lock times. Turn MWD on. Note lock times.
- all frigs orbit again, but this time use MWDs. Notice differences in hit chance.
Exercise 3: close orbits
- switch back to ABs. Repeat exercise 1, but this time at close range. Orbit with and without AB.
- dock and switch to MWDs. Attempt close orbit with MWD.
Exercise 4: approaching
- fit MWDs. One at a time, attempt to close on target ship and tag with civvy gun.
- repeat with ABs.
- possibility of having more than one attempt per pilot
Exercise 5: fleet work
- form "squads" and fly against all instructor ships. Goal of each squad is to continually tag all target ships with civvy guns for a period of 30 seconds.
Extra: what about cruisers?
Demonstration of how sig radius affects an oppnent's ability to hit you. Use a fast cruiser - say a stabber - that is fit to be about the same speed as a noobship w/ ab. Cruiser orbits at the same range and same speed, and note how much more damage the Stabber takes. Illustrate what is meant by "MWD make you fat".
