This is a deprecated class syllabus, intended as historical record for the teaching department.

Creating syllabi is no longer our process for new classes, and no classes in the syllabus library are considered current. They are here for historical purposes only, as well as an optional starting point for designing new classes. Please do not assume any of the classes you find here have slides, or have even been taught for many years. If you do use information in a syllabus, ensure that you have brought it up to date with contemporary EVE.

This is a syllabus for the "Making a Difference in EVE University" class.

Class Information

This section contains the standard information of this class pertaining to scheduling and class contents. The General Information should be sufficient to create a proper class topic for scheduling on the EVE University forum. Additional information relevant to the teacher is listed under Notes for the Teacher.

It should last around 90 minutes, depending on how many questions are asked.

Notes for the Teacher

Required materials:

Welcome! (Instructor should then introduce himself or herself - covering relevant experience level and background)

Some basic information for this class:

  • You should be docked up safely or otherwise non-distracted.
  • Please configure your Mumble settings for "Push to Talk" if you have not already done so.
  • Feel free to type any questions in the Lecture.E-UNI chat channel as we proceed.

  • One of the most important rules in EVE University, and one which we ask everyone to agree to when they join is "Our members are encouraged to balance 'self' with 'service'".
  • EVE University is run entirely by volunteers, and relies on people helping each other out and generating content for each other.
  • The purpose of this class is to give you some ideas on how you can start to help out other members and make a real difference in EVE University.
  • 'Giving back' is also a requirement for the Graduate title, so if you are hoping to apply for that in the near future this class will hopefully give you some ideas of how you can do that.

Passing on Knowledge

Chat channels

Relevant link: EVE University Chat Channels
  • Every new member is brought into a few chat channels when they join, and it is often the first place they will look for help.
  • Q&A.E-Uni - This channel is specifically designed for people to ask questions in, so its a good one to have open if you are looking to help other people. Remember the idea is to keep this channel chat free, so restrict conversation to answering the question and if it turns into more general chat take it to a private convo.
  • Chat.E-Uni - This is the general chat channel but also where a lot of people ask for advice. Also it is where new players are welcomed by the Personnel Officers, so be sure to give them a good welcome.
  • E-UNI - This channel serves two purposes. It is the recruitment channel for EVE University and it is also recommended by CCP as a general help channel. So there will be lots of questions in here either about the application process or about the game in general. If you are a member you are already an expert on the application process from their point of view, so it is easy to offer an insight into some questions they will have.
  • Mess.ILN - This is our general chat and help channel on the subject of PVP. There are normally lots of members here asking for tips on ship fittings and fleets.
  • LiveIntel.ILN - This is our channel used for reporting Intel. If you see a war target in system, provided you are safe, please report it here as this will be a big help to other people. You can also use the Intel map to report your information in one click.
  • Corp - This is a little different to the ones above because it is not just answering questions, but if you have the Freshman title you can be a big help to other members by fulfilling their skillbook reimbursement requests. Doing so is incredibly easy:
    • Set the channel to blink so you see when someone has made a request
    • They will link all the skillbooks they have bought and the price, together with a total price
    • Tell them you are dealing with their request, so noone else starts to do it at the same time
    • Check the skillbooks are all reimbursable (click their names and check market details - anything under 3.5 million ISK is reimbursable) and that the total is less than 3.5 million ISK
    • Once you are satisfied their request meets all the requirements, open up the corp wallet and make sure it is set to the skillbook wallet
    • Click "Transfer ISK" and type in the member's name, then select them from the list
    • Type in the total amount of ISK they are requesting and as a reason type the names of the skillbooks (you can abbreviate them if necessary), then click OK
    • Tell them you have sent them the ISK and ask them to confirm safe receipt

  • We have several sections of the forum where people might ask questions.
  • There is a section called "Questions and Answers" where people can ask questions about different areas of the game. This makes it easy to answer questions on an area you know about. There is also a forum titled "What's Next?" for people who are looking for some direction.
  • The EVE University section covers EVE University in general. In particular there is a Hi and Bye forum (its always nice to make people feel welcome) and web services, which is a good place to keep an eye on if you work in IT or are able to answer technical questions.
  • There is also a section for Public EVE Discussion, where we sometimes have non-members asking questions about EVE University or the game in general.

  • Some people feel more comfortable asking questions in voice, so its a good idea to hang out in the mumble channels to answer questions.
  • We have a Student Lounge which is connected to the Public Lounge. The Student Lounge is restricted to those people actually in EVE University; however the Public Lounge is open to anyone with an account on the EVE University Forums - any EVE Online player in New Eden can join the Public Lounge. Keep this in mind when discussing matters in the Student Lounge - using a "Whisper/Shout" key will allow you to announce anything of an Opsec nature to only those in the Student Lounge. For more detailed conversations relating to anything requiring Opsec, it's a good idea to take anyone involved to a private channel. An On Demand Channel can be set up by anyone on Mumble. The Student Lounge provides a place for Unistas to chat when not busy in a fleet or particular Campus and help answer questions. There is also an Orientation Lounge which is a private place that anyone can go for more detailed one-on-one assistance.
  • Don't be scared about answering questions in voice, even if you are shy. We have a wide range of people in EVE University and we will not judge you!

Creating Content

  • EVE Online is a sandbox, so the players have to make their own content.
  • There is no reason to be bored in EVE Online - if you are bored then someone else is also, so why not get together and do something.
  • We are always grateful when a member "steps up" and starts creating content for others.

Helping on Fleets

  • Fleets can be for various purposes - PVP fleets hunting targets, mining fleets nomming rocks, missioning fleets shooting rats etc
  • There are lots of people involved in a successful fleet, not just the fleet commander, you could help out by:
    • Helping to advertise the fleet beforehand
    • Providing boosts to members (if you have the skills)
    • Carrying out support roles like logistics (for combat fleets) or hauling (for mining fleets)
    • Helping to answer questions from other fleet members who are a bit lost
    • Commanding a fleet yourself - its not as scary as it sounds!
  • Most new members of EVE University have never been on a fleet, so if you have been on a fleet before you have an advantage already.
  • There are no prerequisites for people to lead a fleet and if you get totally whelped we really don't mind, as long as you learned something.

Running events

  • You do not need to be a staff member to run an event in EVE University.
  • The Events department are there to support and assist members in planning their events.
  • We keep a list of popular events (see the link above) with guides on how to run them.
  • You are also welcome to create your own completely new event - the Events department can help you make it happen.
  • You can also assist people who are running events by helping to advertise it and providing support as required.


  • If you are handy with a pen and paper EVE University can make use of your talent.

  • Our Wiki is created entirely by volunteers - it is one of the most respected sources of knowledge in EVE Online.
  • If you are a member of EVE University you can already edit the wiki - see the login button at the top right. The login details are the same as your forum and mumble account.
  • Some pages are 'protected' so they can only be edited by certain people.
  • If you're not sure where to start see our To-Do list above.
  • You don't need any coding knowledge or experience to be able to edit the wiki. Its extremely easy to do and we have guides to assist you.
  • Every user has their own page - click your name in the top right when you're logged in. You can use this page to write about yourself, and you can also create subpages for drafting new pages and sections, so you can test them out before they go "live".
  • You don't need to create a whole new page: just updating a current page, or correcting spelling/grammar/structure is useful.

Writing for our blog

Relevant link:
  • EVE University has a blog on the front page of our website.
  • Again, you are able to submit posts to our blog just by having a forum account. Login at the top right corner with the same details as your forum/mumble account.
  • All posts need to be approved by a Director before they appear on the blog, so once you've written the post send a mail to a Director so they can review and publish it.
  • You can write about anything that will be of general interest outside of EVE University - this includes announcements about changes, and upcoming events.
  • EVE University also has a Facebook and Twitter account - 'Like' and follow us!

Joining the staff

  • All our staff are unpaid volunteers.
  • Each department has different requirements from staff members.
  • Some departments are (almost) always recruiting, so I will cover them in some detail.
  • Other departments recruit as required so keep an eye out for announcements if there is a department you are particularly interested in joining.

  • Mentors are the people who volunteer to help other members one-on-one as part of the Mentor Program.
  • They are responsible for assisting their assigned mentees in their particular area and time zone.
  • To become a mentor you need to:
    • Be a Graduate or be able to demonstrate comparable knowledge in your specialist area
    • Be able to devote at least a few hours every week to your mentees - You may be assigned up to four mentees at a time (depending on your availability)
    • Have an understanding of the fundamentals and basic game mechanics of EVE Online

  • Teachers are the life-blood of EVE University.
  • They are responsible for teaching classes on their specialist area.
  • To become a Teacher you need to:
    • Have a working knowledge of the subject area you want to teach and the ability to communicate it to others
    • Be able to commit to teaching at least one class per month, every month
    • Ideally have either the Sophomore or Graduate title (although this can be waived in special cases)

Personnel Officers

  • Personnel Officers are the people who deal with applications to EVE University.
  • Their job is to review applications and conduct interviews, and to give new members a good start in EVE University.
  • We receive a large number of applications (normally over a hundred per week) so the Personnel department needs a lot of staff to keep up with the demand.
  • To become a Personnel Officer you need to:
    • Have a good understanding of how EVE University works, so you will normally need to have been a member for at least 3 weeks
    • Ideally be a Sophomore (though lower titles will be considered).
    • Show a good amount of activity in EVE University.
    • Be fluent in English.
    • Be willing to dedicate at least a couple of hours per week, every week (ideally more).

Orientation Officers

  • Orientation Officers follow up with new members to EVE University.
  • They reach out to new members to ensure they are settling in and provide them useful information for the individual situation.
  • They act as a contact point for a member's first few weeks in EVE University, answer any questions a new member might have, and help to point them in the right direction.
  • Orientation Officers help answer questions and guide new members in the Student Lounge on Mumble, in our Chat Channels and write follow-up letters to all new and returning Unistas.
  • To become an Orientation Officer you should meet the following criteria:
    • Have been an active member of EVE University for at least three weeks. However we do expect thorough knowledge of how EVE University works, so the longer you have been a member of EVE University, the better your chances.
    • The title of Sophomore is preferred, although members with a Freshman title will be considered.
    • Show a good deal of activity during your time in EVE University, such as helping out in the E-Uni channel, the Student Lounge on Mumble, useful posts in the forum, Killboard activity, etc.
    • Follow the Rules of EVE University and not have any serious disciplinary actions against you - as a Orientation Officer you will be held to a higher standard than other members.
    • You must be able to clearly communicate with new members both verbally and in writing, so we expect you to be fluent in English and have good communication skills.
    • We will expect you to devote time to the Department every week, so please ensure that you have sufficient time available.

Other Staff Positions

  • There are various other staff positions in EVE University, and every department will need to recruit staff at some point.
  • Most open positions are advertised on the forums, so keep an eye out for announcements.
  • The majority of departments will be looking for staff who are active and involved in EVE University life - so get involved and speak to people.
  • Don't be disheartened if you apply for a position and are unsuccessful. All departments are looking for different things and it might just be that you don't meet their requirements at the time.

Donating to EVE University

  • EVE University is run almost entirely on donations.
  • It is free to be a member and attend our classes and you should not feel any obligation to donate your ISK or items. If you do have any spare ISK or items you would like to donate these will be gladly received, though!
  • To donate ISK, bring up EVE University in game and click the four bars on the top left (or right click the name in a chat channel). Then chose "Give ISK to" and enter the amount of ISK you want to donate. Please do not donate ISK directly to the skillbook wallet.
  • To donate items you have 2 options. If you have the Freshman title you will have access to the Corp Hangars, and one of these is marked as a Donation Hangar, just put any items you wish to donate in there and they will then be sorted, inventoried and put in the regular hangars by our hangars team. If you don't have the Freshman title yet, contract your items to a Director and send them a mail asking them to put the items in the hangars for you.
  • We can accept donations anywhere but it is easier for us logistically if they are donated either in our HQ or in one of the campuses.

A Final Note
