Notes for the teacher

Required materials:

While this syllabus is fairly detailed, teachers should not just recite this document. Make sure to read it thoroughly, use its structure as a guide for the structure of your class, but make it your own - feel free to insert your own insights and experiences as you cover the key points.

Class Content

Introduction to Mining

  • Eve University Mining Loaner Fleet
  • How to mine?
    • Any ship with a mining laser fitted in a high slot can mine
    • Lock on to an asteroid, turn on the laser, collect ore
  • Why mine?
    • Sales of ores for ISK
    • Refining ores into minerals for sales
    • Refining for production
  • Asteroid belts and me: intro to basic ores and minerals
    • Basic ores: Veldspar, Scordite, Pyroxeres, Plagioclase, Omber, Kernite, Jaspet, Hemorphite, Hedbergite, Gneiss, Dark Ochre, Crokite, Spodumain, Bistot, Arkanor, Mercoxit
    • Refined minerals: Tritanium, Pyerite, Mexallon, Isogen, Nocxium, Zydrine, Megacyte, Morphite
    • Relationships of ores and minerals:
    • Grades of ores: common, +5%, +10% grades (e.g., Veldspar, Concentrated Veld, Dense Veldspar) -
    • Where to mine?
      • Typical locations for ores:
        • Hi-sec ores: Veldspar, Scordite, Pyroxeres, Plagioclase, Omber, Kernite
        • Low-sec ores: Jaspet, Hemorphite, Hedbergite
        • Null-sec ores: Arkonor, Bistot, Crokite, Gneiss, Spodumain, Mercoxit
          • Note that Mercoxit in 0.0 is the only place to get Morphite
        • Ores also vary by Empire
      • Gravimetric sites: can contain any ores regardless of security status

Essential Mining Skills

  • Mining: 5% yield bonus per level
  • Astrogeology: 5% yield bonus per level
  • Mining Upgrades: 5% reduced CPU penalty for upgrade modules

Recommended Mining Skills

These can be learned later

  • Drones: Skill at remote controlling drones. Can operate 1 drone per skill. (Drones cannot be carried by frigs)
    • Scout Drones Operations: Skill at controlling scout combat drones. Bonus: drone control range increased by 5000m per level (Used for defense)
    • Mining Drones Operations: Skill at controlling mining drones. 5% to mining drone yield per level
  • Hull Upgrades: Allows use of Expanded Cargohold
  • Refining: 2% reduction in refinery waste per level
  • Refinery Efficiency: 4% reduction in refinery waste per level
  • Ore Processing Skills: 5% reduction in refining waste of specific ore. Allows for Mining Crystal use.

Early Mining Ships Overview

  • Frigates: Tormentor, Bantam, Navitas, Burst
    • All frigates: 5% bonus to cargohold/20% bonus to mining laser yield per level, -60% mining laser capacitor use
  • Cruisers: Arbitrator, Osprey, Vexor, Scythe
    • Amarr and Gallente cruiser: 10% bonus to mining drone yield per level
    • Caldari and Minmatar cruiser: 20%bonus to mining lasers yield per level

Mining Ship Fitting

  • General mining fittings
    • Increased cargo
    • Usually shield tanked
    • Mining upgrades vs expanded cargoholds
  • Mining Laser Progression
    • Miner I, 40m3 base per 60 sec (needs Mining-1)
    • Miner II, 60m3 base per 60 sec (needs Mining-4)
    • Strip Miners, higher yield but only fits on mining barges and exhumers
      • Strip Miner I, 540m3 base per 180 sec (180m3/min) (needs Mining-4)
    • Modulated lasers, able to fit mining crystals
      • Modulated Strip Miner II, 360m3 base per 180 sec (120m3/min) (needs Mining-5)
      • Base with Veldspar Mining Crystal I, 585m3 per 180 sec (195m3/min)
      • Base with Veldspar Mining Crystal II, 630m3 per 180 sec (210m3/min)
    • Deep Core lasers, used to mine Mercoxit
      • Inefficient when used for other ores
  • Mining Upgrade Modules
    • Mining Laser Upgrade I, 5% yield 10% CPU (needs Mining Upgrades I)

Making Money in Mining

  • To refine or not to refine
    • Taxes and standing: 5% standard tax rate in NPC stations, can be reduced with higher standings
    • Processing Yield = station_equipment_base_yield + 0.375 * (1+(refining_skill_level*0.02)) * (1+(refinery_efficiency_skill_level*0.04)) * (1+(special_processing_skill_level*0.05))
