20th Anniversary Eagle Logo.png This page is specific to EVE University. Other corporations or groups in the game may operate differently.
For a summary of EVE University's rules and code of conduct, see EVE University Rules.

EVE University is a 'neutral' corporation. This means we avoid getting involved in the politics of EVE Online. This page sets out in more detail the reason for our neutrality and how it works in practice, both as a guide for members and an explanation for non-members.

Why is EVE University neutral?

EVE University is first and foremost a teaching organisation. We aim to teach players, both old and new, about how to get along in New Eden. We have various campuses and activities to give people a taste of different areas and aspects of the game. The majority of our members will at some point leave EVE University and join another corporation.

The reason we stay neutral is we want our alumni to be able to pursue whatever path they choose after they leave EVE University. What we don't want is for our actions, or those of our members, to prevent a person joining a corporation/alliance or doing what they want to do in the game. Through this policy we have a wide network of alumni in almost every large group in the game, which provides a range of opportunities for our members.

How does EVE University as a corporation maintain its neutrality?

Maintaining neutrality in EVE Online is incredibly difficult! Anything that involves interacting with third parties has a possibility of affecting our neutrality so we have to be careful as a corporation not to invoke any bias. For example, we are keen to encourage guest lecturers to come and teach our members about EVE Online, to assist us in our mission of education. However, and most importantly, we do not show preference towards any third party/particular group or alliance, say by inviting only their members to come and talk for us. By being careful to avoid this, it ultimately leaves our alumni with the most options open for corporations to join.

We also have a very open diplomatic policy, with an invitation for anyone to apply for a non-aggression pact. Sometimes there is a good reason we cannot grant this, but everyone is able to request this, and every request will be judged fairly on its merits, regardless of the political affiliation of the group making the request.

What do EVE University members need to do to maintain our neutrality?

In order to maintain neutrality we require our members to limit their gameplay in some ways. While we understand this can sometimes be frustrating on a personal level, we strongly believe that it is in the best interests of the corporation.

Follow our rules of engagement

In EVE Online, most corporations will have rules which tell members who they can take aggressive action against. EVE University's rules of engagement are set out on our rules page. EVE University follow 'Not Red Don't Shoot' in high security space and 'Not Blue Shoot It' everywhere else.

Provided a member is using the EVE University Overview, the people they can engage in high security space are marked with the following icons: Red Minus - Terrible standings from your alliance/corp/self Orange Minus - Bad standings from your alliance/corp/self Red Star - At war with your corp/alliance Orange Skull - Pilot has security status below -5 Red Skull - Pilot is a criminal Yellow Skull - Pilot is a suspect Turquoise Skull - Pilot has a limited engagement with you

Provided a member is using the EVE University Overview, the people they can engage in low security, null security or wormhole space are marked with the following icons: Neutral Standing Red Minus - Terrible standings from your alliance/corp/self Orange Minus - Bad standings from your alliance/corp/self Red Star - At war with your corp/alliance Orange Skull - Pilot has security status below -5 Red Skull - Pilot is a criminal Yellow Skull - Pilot is a suspect Turquoise Skull - Pilot has a limited engagement with you

It is forbidden for members to take aggressive action against a player or group which has a non-agression pact with EVE University. Again, provided a member is using the EVE University Overview, these people will be marked with the following icons: Dark Blue Plus - Excellent standings from your alliance/corp/self Light Blue Plus - Good standings from your alliance/corp/self

Laura: Actually in hindsight, maybe move this part ^ to a Rules of Engagement page and link that here

It is also forbidden to indirectly violate our rules of engagement by, for example, selling a killright against a player with a non-aggression pact with EVE University, to allow another person to take aggressive action against them.

Follow our rules on structures

Structures are an important part of EVE Online. Players and groups may own their own structures, and they can be very valuable as well as providing strategic advantages. In EVE University we use the phrase 'player owned structure' to cover a range of items, including citadels, POSes, POCOs or any other permanently placed structure owned by a player or a player organisation.

The only time our members are permitted to take aggressive action against a player owned structure is with permission from either a Director, a Diplomat or the Campus Manager in the area of space where the structure is placed. The best place to ask for permission for this is in Slack because it allows for an immediate response, even if the person who needs to make the decision is not online. All of the campus Slacks have a channel called 'need-a-staffer' ('pingstaff' in WHC). Post your request in there and it will be drawn to the attention of someone able to make the decision. Due to the potential impact on EVE University of us attacking a structure, and the timers involved, we will need you to have detailed plan before permission is granted to attach a structure, including when the timers are (if any), the doctrines you plan to use, the strategy you plan to use etc. We don't expect you to do everything yourself, but if you are unable to come up with a decent plan in order to make the engagement successful, permission will not be granted.

Using an entosis link against a player owned structure without permission from a Director, a Diplomat or the Campus Manager in the area of space where the structure is placed is also prohibited.

Considering representation

It is quite normal in EVE Online for people to have multiple characters. We generally do not mind what people use their other characters for, provided they are not doing anything to harm the interests to EVE University. We also allow players to join EVE University on a character which is not their 'main' character. However, using EVE University membership, communication channels or resources to benefit another group is prohibited. For example, by using their status as an EVE University member to spy on another group and maintain an innocent appearance.

Using another character which is clearly linked to EVE University or a character in EVE University to bypass any of EVE University's rules, including those on neutrality, is also forbidden. It is also forbidden to use EVE University communication channels to discuss or coordinate anything that would breach EVE University's neutrality.

This is not a definitive list of items that may threaten our neutrality, but it is intended to give some guidance on what is allowed and what is not. If you have any questions, please speak to a Director, an Orientation Officer or a Student Advocate.
