The goal of a mining fleet is to make ISK for every participant. It has a benefit over solo mining in that it is slightly more secure, there are other people to perform roles such as hauling leaving the miners to concentrate on mining, and it is a lot more social and fun! Most EVE University mining fleets are one of these types:
- Standard: This is a fleet you can join to get "boosts" from the fleet while in the same belt as booster, though miners will haul their own ore to the station. This is typically an Orca pilot with a few spare fleet spots that they let others use. There is no shared ore or profit and miners are encouraged to use the Buyback Program for assistance in turning ore into isk
- Shared Can (SC): This is a mining fleet where the miners give all the ore to the FC, who sells the ore than gives every one a cut of the profits. The program is great for new pilots who may not have advanced skills to get a taste of the isk mining can provide.
Roles in a Mining Fleet
There are many ways to participate in a mining fleet. Most newer players will, of course, be mining in a mining frigate, destroyer or barge.
- Miner: The role of the miner is just to mine as much ore as possible. The majority of members in the mining fleet will be miners.
- Booster: The job of the booster is to provide mining boosts which increase the yield of miners and to provide Compression to the fleet. This means that haulers do not need to slow boat around the field. Boosters fly Orcas and Porpoises.
How to participate
- Arrive at the fleet site in the mining ship you want to use. Sometimes loaners are available, but always ask ahead of arrival to ensure stock.
- Join the fleet using the fleet finder.
- Reload the MOTD and click the link in the message to open the payout form.
- Note the time you joined the fleet in the form.
- Start mining following the normal HighSec Mining Rules and instructions from the MOTD and FC.
- Whenever you have between 1,000 m3 and 5,000 m3 of compressed ore, jettison the ore. The FC will have a Mobile Tractor Unit that will pull your ore to the FC.
- When you leave, whether at the end of the fleet or if you need to leave early, drop any last ore and fill out the rest of the payout form and submit it.
Shared can fleets typically payout in about a week as the FC has to sell the ore and calculate the payout.
