They give a significant increase for the corporation of the agent you are doing the mission for and a moderate increase for it's faction. While also giving derived standing changes to other factions. Positive to factions whom the agent's faction is friendly to and negative to factions the agent's has a dislike for. So, as you where getting negative standing changes for Minmatar and Gallente you probably where doing the mission for Amarr or Caldari.
