==First Day in the Hole?== | ==First Day in the Hole? Situational Awareness==
First, welcome to the WHC. We hope you enjoy your stay.
This section is intended to help new pilots get acclimated to their first day and create some general good practices while living in the wh to keep everyone safe and secure in terms of good situational awareness.
Before anything, be sure to get in mumble and get in the WHC fleet. Note that you may have to ask for access to the fleet in mumble and verify that you are a new member admitted to the WHC.
Situational awareness is probably the most important factor when living in w-space. We must always be constantly aware of who is in our w-space and all the connections between our space and space around us (both k-space and w-space connections).
In order to be situationally aware, there are some procedures that you might want to follow every time you log in or enter the known w-space. There are other procedures for entering unknown or unscanned w-space, but these are covered in classes and other wiki pages provided by the uni.
# Check in mumble if there are any unfriendlies identified in system
# Check the mapper for any activity/pvp in the system and to get an idea of connections and signatures in the system.
# D-scan always - It is very important to be aware of your d-scan results and your overview tabs. It is always a good idea to be aware of both fleet members in system and visitors using D-scan. So, having multiple overviews setup for different information will help you d-scan quickly and know who is in your system (uncloaked).
# "Friendly Probes" - it is always a good idea to check the mapper and ask in fleet/mumble if the system has been scanned recently. The mapper will indicate when a system is scanned and the time of the scan, so this should be identifiable. If no one has scanned recently, send out a single probe (announce it in fleet/mumble that you are launching probes) and check for new signatures (not bookmarked and not in the mapper). If everything is the same, you are aware of all the connections. If there is a new signature, send out more probes and scan it down to see if we have a new w or k-space connection.
# Now that you are situationally aware of your surroundings, you can enjoy the spoils of w-space by joining fleets to run sites, huff gas, pvp, or other activities. PI is also always available as another activity.
* Do not get complacent or over confident. A single Stealth Bomber can take out an industrial very quickly before anyone can help to arrive.
Monitor D-scan and stay in mumble/fleet.
Never operate AFK outside the pos-shield (even in the pos shield, you could get bumped out or warped by your squad leader inadvertently).
