Tragic and horrifying backstory hints

Which interpretation is more horrifying?
- Why do you hunt us?
- Why do you hate us?
In any case, I have been looking for little in-game hints at the tragic/horrifying back stories woven through the game, contemplating an eventual wiki article that links into small narrative hints like this one. While most of the attention in the wiki is (justifiably) focused on game mechanics and strategy, I think the overall story structure/lore is one of the most interesting parts of the game.
