One of the tabs that is always opened when you log in to Eve is the "Local" tab. This tab identifies all player characters that are in the same solar system that you are in. The top of the tab shows the number of players that are in the same solar system that you are in.

Most chat channels only show a player in the list at the right if the player "speaks" in channel. The "Local" channel however ALWAYS shows all player characters that are in the local system regardless of whether they have "spoken" in channel or not UNLESS you are in wormhole space.

It is often important to be ever alert for changes of the number and classification of players in "Local". During war time or if you are not in a high security system this is especially important. A spike in the number of players in "Local" could mean the arrival of a fleet or reinforcements. The primary classification to be concerned about during war time is whether or not a player is a war target.

In the list of players to the right of the chat area a war target can be identified by the player having a red star at the bottom right of their name. This symbol will show up regardless of whether you have the player portrait downloaded or not. There is also no need to right click a player and check standing. Just scroll through the list of players in "Local" and look for the red star.
