Neve Talie-Ko is a daughter of the high caste Li Talie and Kuo Yeung bloodlines. Born into effortless prosperity and prized as a potential "ladder climber"--an offspring with the qualities to marry up in social standing--Neve displayed uncharacteristic interest and ability in physics and math classes at her training academy. While tolerated and even touted in the early forms, her interest became an obsession with the opportunities presented by the Jin-Mei's relatively recent introduction to the universe of New Eden.

In her adolescence Neve came under the influence of a "boot strapper"--a Jing Ko caste member who had up-jumped as a result of his economic success--who taught at the University of Caille: Blameston III Up-port, in Jin Mei space. To make a short story even shorter, her parents were killed in a tragic accident just as Neve was slated to graduate from her private academy in Boomtown, Blameston III. With her parents' assets locked up in a legal tangle, Neve was removed from her school in favor of a student whose folks could pay the fees.

Unknown to her, her parents had been living beyond their means to maintain the Jin Mei caste appearances. Several chickens came home to roost in the wake of her orphaning. Not the least of which was the discovery that the house she lived in had been put up as collateral for a loan and they had cancelled their life insurance policies to invest the premium money in their business. Upon her parents' demise, the lein holder swept in and put Neve on the streets. Neve became a pariah to her caste and was shunned by her extended family. Excluded from the advantages of her birth, she discovered a branch of her family tree that had left the upper class of Boomtown a century before.

This new family took her in and gave her work. She made contacts in the Jing Ko that brought her back in touch with Professor Dew Xiong of the University of Caille. Doc Xiong took Neve under his wing and tutored her in a few initial skills that would enable her to catch on with an interstellar warp ship plying the space lanes between the neighboring systems. She would have to start at the very bottom of the hierarchy--no capsuleer status at this point--but it was a living.

She appended the Ko caste identifier to her name and cut all ties with her past to follow and find her future in New Eden.
