The elite battleships deal very high damage at around 20 km range and close in on you with MWD. You can warp out and warp back in at range and kill as many elite battleships as you can while they approach.  Even the tankiest T1 battleship won't be able to tank more than two of them at once so don't rush triggering the later spawns too early.
