In ancient Greek mythology, Thanatos was a personification of death; the word itself (Θάνατος) was also simply the ancient Greek word for death in general. Some writers grouped Thanatos with other personifications of negative experiences and emotions as siblings, treating him as a brother of (among others) Eris, Moros, Nemesis and Charon; in some accounts, Thanatos was distinguished, as peaceful death, from the Keres, associated with violent death. | |||
