***Most of these latter aspects will come from experience just use your best judgement at the time. If you have the isk and don't mind loosing your ship to find out give the fight ago.  If you loose try talking to the other pilot and ask him about his fit, you will be surprised how friendly most of the eve population is.

One thing that is always helpful is ship knowledge, by this I mean how different ships are normally fit. For example you see a Tristan at a small complex and will know roughly how it should be fit.  This type of knowledge comes from experience in the game and from doing your research. After all this is EVE University what would it be with out a bit of homework.  So in your time whilst you not PVP'ing or earning your isk for PVP, take the time to look up a few ships that you have lost engagements to and look at how they are usually fit. This will help you understand why you lost the fight and what you could do different in the future. This would be either not taking the fight in the first place or using a different tactic depending on what you learn from your ''Homework.''
