My Mini After Action Reports
2011.10.16 1500-2300 UTC
My first mining fleet. I somehow managed to sit through 8 hours of mining. Someone posted a bookmark for a grav site with lots of kernite in it so I formed a small fleet and we went out and started clearing the kernite. About 45 minutes into this, the one and only wartarget of the university showed up in system and started harassing people. So we docked up for about an hour and waited him out. Then back to kernite. More people joined. Eventually, the grav site was cleared and we moved on to one of the system belts and mined it clear. At the end, we had something like 5 hulks and 3 orcas and a few retrievers. After 8 hours, I quite and let someone else take over the op.

Joined a low-sec roam fleet with 33 pilots right at the end of the no-WSOP month. Tried to catch a faction BS that was missioning, but he warped off just before we got there. We wandered around for a long time looking for targets, finally ended up sitting around in a system for so long that a hostile corp found us and engaged at long range with a T3/faction sniper fleet. When the FC called a primary, I turned on my micro-warpdrive and hauled towards tackling range... and was promptly destroyed. Total Leeeeeeroy Jenkins moment. Saikal said, "that tackler of ours that got killed... had balls of steel." So I guess that's something. I spent the rest of the 21 minute battle bouncing. In all, we killed one drake and they killed about 20 of our ships. It was a slaughter. And because I was essentially absent for the entire battle, I didn't get to learn much. I am happy that I was able to save my pod, though.

Immediately after the Mining 101 course I attended, the teacher put together a "Mining Under Fire" fleet to go do some mining in hostile conditions. However, the No-WSOP month wardecs were all basically gone, so there weren't any WT's around to harass us. So our very handy escort fleet managed to find a wormhole and we went through that, found a grav site, mined the crap out of it until all our haulers were full and each of our cargoholds were full, podded some guy who showed up randomly just as we left, and went home. We made off with several thousand units of the most expensive ore in the game, which we will be splitting the profits from. It was my first time in a wormhole, first time with rare ores, and a lot of fun. Good group. No killmails. I probably have an unrealistically easy view of WH space now...

Joined back into the still-going defensive aldrat fleet that had started for the POS repair. For the duration it was just a camp on the gate, and for the most part nothing happened... until a corp brought a reasonable force of mostly battlecruisers and a couple battleships in through a wormhole behind us (!!). At least one of the battleships was smartbombing, which was a new experience for me. I died with great gusto after pointing the offender. He proceeded to pod me.
Despite the loss of a noob in a tackler, the 100+ strong fleet managed to wipe out the aggressing fleet entirely, including the BS that had killed me:
- Typhoon BS: point and 101 damage (0.26%).
We lost six frigates. They lost everything. It was an absurdly efficient fight. Some friendly soul contracted me a fitted Tristan to replace my Incursus and I re-joined the gate camp. The guy who podded me sent me an apology along with a hefty sum of ISK, so I can't complain. GF.
About half an hour later, the same folks came back, this time with more battleships and four logistics ships as well. This time, we wiped them out completely and lost nothing. It was a slaughter. And somehow I managed to stay out of the smartbombs this time. Got my name on four more killmails, though I could never get close enough to actually land any damage... points only.
- Tempest BS: point but zero damage.
- Guardian Logi: point but zero damage.
- Maelstrom BS: point but zero damage.
- Scorpion BS: point but zero damage.

Joined the Aldrat defense fleet during the repair of the POS after reinforcement dropped. Took up a DGC on the Eygfe gate for the duration, but no one ever came through. No action. Repair went very quickly; I enjoyed the screenshots of it that people posted. Shortly after the shield was back to 100%, I had to go so I docked back up.

Joined a 32 ship fleet that took forever getting organized. While waiting in an OGC in Aldrat, we managed to knock off a Raptor that had been bothering the fleet for hours. I got one shot off before he melted; though it failed to hit, I still showed up on my first killboard! Woot.
Next we headed out to pick up a marooned Megathron on the far side of Ranser. WT's in Ranser tried to muster three carriers on us but we escaped unscathed. On the way back, we happened upon a faction Megathron WT, unescorted, who happened to walk right into our gate camp and we nailed him hard. My second killboard appearance of the day, and this time with non-zero damage! No killmail, but that's fine. I did get a web and a point on him, plus did 268 damage with my guns. Very fun. After the kill, we returned to base as a lot of people needed to sign off so I called it a night.

Joined a fleet for a couple hours, wasn't involved in any kills, we didn't encounter much... ended up going into lowsec (my first intentional trip there) and eventually to Jita (my first trip there). Unfortunately, had to drop fleet 25 highsec jumps away from Aldrat. Upon return I safely traversed back to Aldrat.

My first fleet! I wanted to do something during this no SOP month, so I trained up the recommended skills recommended for a basic PvP Incursus tackler as given here. I got an outfitted ship from the Uni hangar, listened to the archive of the Fleets 101 class, and joined up for the next fleet when I had some free time. I needed a lot of hand-holding, but everyone was really helpful and I didn't seem to be too much of a boat anchor to my squad.
We left Aldrat in search of war targets, eventually found some a couple jumps away and tried to engage. I immediately learned about docking games. Frustrated by the lack of combat we moved on to a a collection of battleships in the next system over and I got to see my first PvP combat! I was pretty overwhelmed by what was going on, but I did manage to get in range and tackle one of the battleships. I got my point and web on, lit up my guns, and orbited happily. No one seemed to take any interest in my tackler so at that point I just tried to get an idea of what was going on. Unfortunately, the battle was not going well as they had a lot of out-of-corp remote repairers keeping the battleship alive. After we had lost a few of our larger ships a scatter was called and I got away safely.
There was some time spent bouncing around the system, then reforming and I learned about a rolling safe and how to make bookmarks mid-warp. We made our way back to Aldrat and I docked. All in all, a reasonably unsuccessful fleet; we lost six ships (4 BC, 1 C, 1 D) and they lost none. However, it was great for me as I came out of it feeling confident that I could perform a basic tackling role in fleet. I learned a lot and I'm no longer apprehensive about joining a fleet. Looking forward to my next opportunity; hopefully next time I'll get to be part of a kill!
