DEFCON 3 Normal War in Progress
One or more wars from small groups are in progress. Significant military actions by the hostile forces are unlikely, however you can be fired upon anywhere in space, so caution is strongly suggested at all times, especially around HQ and trade hubs.
DEFCON 2 War: Increasing Danger
Additional wars have recently been declared but have not yet taken effect. Please update your information base to include the new War Targets and increase your vigilance.
DEFCON 1 Major War in Progress
A widespread War with an active and powerful enemy is live and in-progress. Military action is under way, and you should watch for War Targets at all times.
Research Missions
Research missions are a part of the Industry career path. These missions award special kinds of points that can be used to buy Datacores from the agent who gives the missions. Datacores are used in the process of Invention. Unlike other mission agents, research agents work for you ... and you must start, and if necessary stop, their research.
Starting Research
To qualify for any research missions you must first have trained"
- Science to Level 5
- One or more of Mechanics, CPU Management, and/or Power Grid Management to level 5
To acquire missions from a research agent, you must first "hire" the agent and initiate the research process. You do this by clicking on the "Start Research" button that appears on the agent's conversation window. If you try to get a mission before you have started working with the agent, he or she will tell you that they have nothing for you at this time.
When you press the "Start Research" button, a window will pop up to ask you what kind of research you want to do. There will two or more choices of which you must (and can only) choose one. The choices available will depend on the agent's science specialty fields. To be able to choose a specialty you must have trained for this kind of science to at least the level of the agent. This page contains a list of EVE research agents, their fields, levels and locations.
Once you have chosen a field, the agent will tell you how happy he or she is to be working with you. At some point in the near future, usually about a day later, you will receive an email communication from the agent. He or she will be in need of some service that you will be expected to provide. Generally, this is either a short courier run to another station, or the delivery to the agent of a small amount of a common mineral (that you are expected to either mine or buy).
The agent will stop working until you complete the mission. After completion, the agent will begin to work again.
Points and Datacores
Each day the agent works, he or she will add some points to your Research account. At any time, you may choose to spend these points to buy datacores. These will always match the science specialty that you chose when you started the research.
Datacores may be used in the Invention process, or they may be sold in the market.
