The role of the Student Relations Department is to provide a voice for the student body to the Directorate and Management in a fashion much like EVE's CSM in that they filter through popular issues and concerns bringing forward those that are deemed most important.  The Student Relations Department's staff also act as mediators for when those inevitable clashes between members occur.  EVE University is both large in numbers and broad in the cultural and nationality scope.  When an issue arises it is the goal to bring them to a friendly resolution to allow members to continue enjoying their time in EVE University.  The Student Relations Department also acts to ensure both EVE University Rules and the Wartime Standard Operating Procedures are being followed, applied, and adjuticated fairly and firmly for all members and staff, along with sending out routine reminders on Uni Rules, WSOP, policies, and procedures.

The Student Relations Department is overseen and managed by the Student Relations Manager (SRM). The SRM is also the ILN Judge Advocate.

About the role: The Student Relations Manager essentially functions as a mediator, addressing issues at student level before they escalate to the point where a director should need to get involved. They are a point of contact for the student body, acting much like EVE's CSM in that they try to filter through the popular issues and bring the important ones to the attention of the directorate. The SRM can also be considered the "voice" of the students, acting on their behalf in dealings with the directorate. It is for this reason that the SRM has much the same levels of access as directors, though they lack the in-game powers and roles. Have you got an issue or need and explanation? Then the Student Relations Manager is the person you should speak to.

About the person: Marius began his life as a Unista in December of 2010 after waiting a gruelling 19 days in the dreaded Queue.  He volunteered for the ILN shortly after that and became a Lamb in Battle Group I "The Black Sheep".  Shortly after that he volunteered to become a recruiter for the University.  With the help of BG1 Training officers, especially Sam Seraph, "Mad Dog" Marius was soon promoted to Ensign and was kicked out of the Lamb barracks by Sam himself.  If anyone at the barracks in CBT comes across care packages of cookies please forward them on to the rightful addressee.  Marius established himself as a solid Personnel Officer and was soon promoted to Senior Personnel Officer, and much to his contemporaries' dismay, to Assistant Personnel Manager. In August of 2011 he was foolish enough to take on the position of Student Relations Manager. Contrary to popular belief, Marius is not syphoning off Uni R & D funds to find a way to mount Strip Miners onto his beloved Catalyst.

Student Relations Assistants
The role of the Student Relations Assistants is to provide additional points of contact for members and staff should there be any Student Relations issues arise.  They act with the authority of the SRM when the SRM is not available.  They also assist the SRM with administrative side of the department.

What duties does the Student Relations Department carry on?
The scope of the duties is to ensure that the Uni is running smoothly as possible with all members following rules, policies, procedures, and protocols, and not letting issues grow to the point of explosions. Those should be for pew-pew.

*We maintain and post in the Member Records forum area, lending our input to calm upset managers and directors, and to ensure any issues are handled as fairly as possible to whomever the issue is about.

*We maintain a googledoc sheet called the "Memrec" or Member Records Sheet to track open issues as forums tend to get cluttered and issues can end up "forgotten".

*In extreme cases the SRM will make recommendations in the best interest of the Uni and all members to remove someone from the Uni when it's clear an issue can't be resolved.

*We monitor the Uni Killfeed for WSOP issues and other odd-looking kills or losses.  This is where your comments on your kills and losses are most beneficial since (if done as required) they tell us what is going on and can mitigate against any action or sanction that could occur otherwise.

*We moderate Uni chat channels and Mumble.

*We give input where needed to all the Divisions of the Uni to ensure your needs and expectations are being met.  Note that some things we don't have any control over.

What do I do if I have a complaint?
Should you have a complaint with another member, a staff member, manager, or even a director that has not been resolved of it's own accord then we are who you want to get in touch with.

*Ensure that you have taken reasonable steps to resolve the issue yourself.  Try a private convo, evemail, or forum PM with the other party.  Most issues are simply misunderstandings based on someone's mood, cultural or language difference, or playstyle, and if it was in chat only the communication between you and the other party can be difficult to "read" as in what mannerisms or tones are intended.  Example, one person is making a joke and believes you're enjoying/getting it, yet you don't "know" that's the intent and you've taken it personally, and vice versa.

*Contact a Student Relations Assistant or the Student Relations Manager via forum private message, or evemail with your complaint.  Be perpared to provide chatlogs and/or copies of evemails, forum PMs, or any other correspondence/evidence as this will help us get to a resolution quicker.

*If your issue is with a staff member, manager, or director, and they were simply reminding you of or enforcing Uni rules and/or policies we may not treat it as a complaint.

*Please do not discuss your complaint with others or bring it forward to other staff, managers, or directors, as this can widen the situation and make it much more difficult to deal with and bring to a timely resolution.  We've had cases of this in the past and what could have been resolved quickly ended up taking weeks, and no one was happy at the end of it all.

*Give us the courtesy of patience and time to get to the bottom of the issue.  We all have real lives and we also like to enjoy playing EVE Online.  And there may be other, more critical issues that need handling.

*In cases of complaints against someone we are not here to determine who is who is right or wrong but rather to bring the complaint issue to a peaceful and amicable resolution between the parties involved.

*If we issue you interim instructions please be sure to follow them.  These are designed to keep the issue from getting worse, thus complicating and delaying a resolution.

We will do our best to help you resolve the issue in a timely fashion.

I screwed up with the WSOP. What can I expect?
When it comes to the WSOP our goal is to first ensure you learn from the mistake and avoid future mistakes.  We're not here to catch you in a mistake and kick you for it.

In the event that you have either lost a "risk" ship or you've violated one of the basic must do's or must not do's...

*Own up to the mistake.  You can contact a Student Relations staff member or other Manager and let us know what happened.  This will help mitigate against harsher consequences.

*If it involves a loss (or kill) make sure you comment on it.  Commenting on your loss (or kill) will again help mitigate against harsher consequences.

*There will be a post made in the Member Records about the incident.  Managers and Directors have access to this confidential forum and they make comments, suggestions, and the CEO and the Directors can issue decisions.

*Members of the Uni with 7 days or less (total time) in the Uni will be given more latitude of leniency with regards to consequences.  We will try and contact you to help you understand what went wrong and help you prevent similar losses/incidents.
