Preamble

Viswane Heind Haklar> I was told fitting was a very deep skill that requires 10K hours to simply begin the process of maybe one day actually fathoming the concept of comprehending.
Viswane Heind Haklar> With only like 5 People on at any given moment that know the process.

Well, not exactly true, but there is something in fitting that requires experience. My usual advice - make 100 bad fits, and then you'll start making good ones. I did that :P

What I would like to do (I know, I know, I have never-ending, always-expanding ToDo list) is to walk you through few fits as I make them - trying to explain my reasoning, why I picked such fit, and I why I think it will work.

"Generally"

I will use a lot of 'generallies'. EVE is like that - exceptions layered on exceptions and edge cases. I will try to do 'conventional' fits, something you may find in the wild - but there will always be weird fits for specific cases that will break the rules.

Basics

Every fit begins the same, and there are 3 main questions I ask:

What for?

Every fit is for 'something' - to do a specific task. Be it PvP, Mining, Missions - whatever you need, you need to know what you're fitting for. That will define key characteristics that fits should have

PvE

PvE tends to be long. That means that you have to pay extra attention to sustained statistics - if your tank can survive 100 EHP/s, but only for 10 seconds - it's probably not good for PvE. That's why Armor Buffer fits are (generally) not used for PvE.

PvE is 'solved'. You know exactly what to expect in each mission/pocket/anomaly/PvE thingy of your choice.

What Ship?

That's the second main question - what ship you want to use? Usually that's picked based on preference, not on efficiency - which is fine.

Who is the pilot?

No less important than previous two questions. If fitting for myself - I know what I like, I know my skills (in- and out- of game) so it's easy. If fitting for others - I try to avoid making absolute statements (That's a bad ship!) unless it's really called for.

Non-Basics

ToDo: Describe general order of operations

Case study - Vexor

Hornet I x9

Vespa I x8

What for? What ship? For Whom?

PvE, obviously. I can't make proper PvP fit :) General fit for L2 missions, for rather new Alpha player who picked Vexor as their ship of choice. Good choice BTW. Vexor is reliable PvE Droneboat.

Tank

Tank is the first thing I usually put on the PvE fit - as that locks some slots out, forces other fitting compromises and generally gives me the first idea if the fit works or not.
I do recommend checking Tanking for more details - I won't write a lot about general tank types here.
This Vexor is clasically Armor Tanked, with AB for extra Speed Tanking.

Damage Control

I always put Damage Control. It's a good module - no stacking penalties, gives good resists to Hull (in case of issues might save you) and gives base layer of resistances to build upon.

Multispectrum Energized Membrane

Armor ship, so Armor Resists! That's obvious no-brainer (so far - no stacking penalties)

Medium Armor Repairer

Vexor is a medium ship, so Medium Repper. In this particular case - Enduring, due to probability of low skills (on Armor and Engineering side)

Medium Explosive Armor Reinforcer

Armor generally has weakest resists to Explosive damage type. I do prefer to plug the holes with rigs, as wasting slot for specific hardener/coating doesn't make sense. It could be done with specific resists for each mission, but a) I'm lazy, and b) It's a fit for someone else. If they lose a ship because it was fit for Serpentis, and they fought Sansha - I would feel guilty.

Tank rigs

This fit got Medium Nanobot Accelerator I and Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump I. Good combo for Armor Repper, and for Drone Boats the choice is rather easy - there aren't many useful rigs for Drones.

Prop Mod

AB or MWD? General thought process:
- If the fit requires speed tank - AB
- If the fit uses long range weapons - AB
- If the fit uses short range weapons - MWD
Why?
For short range weapons, you want to close the distance fast - to get enemies in range. That forces MWD. In case of this Vex - AB is kinda required for tank (not really, but I generally overtank the ships at first round), and Drones are long range - no need for MWD.

DPS

Simple - fill all remaining low slots with DPS modules. That's always useful, always needed. We can remove them later on if needed.

What else?

Now you need to figure stuff out. My general idea about this ship is to send out drones, and stay at range to be safe (but Guristas!).

Cap Battery

You need cap for PropMod, you need cap for Repper, you need cap for (some) guns. Fit does not have to be cap stable - but has to be stable with AB, and provide decent time with Armor Repper running.

Drone Link Augmentor

Well, if I want range, I need DLA's. I had enough CPU for 2 of them, so in they went.

Sensor Booster

Doesn't make sense to have long range drones, if you can lock targets to command them.

Drone Navigation Computer I

Long range + drones means you wait for them to fly to target. Since no better module for Mid-slot was available, Nav Comp goes here.

Two empty High Slots

It is useful to have a gun on droneboat - to pull aggro to you, instead of your drones. So I gave it a gun (I could fit properly sized gun, but any would do).

Auto Targeting Unit - provides 2 additional locks (if you have skills) but consumes no extra resources. Keep it online but off.
