I've been asked to work through the teaching department wiki pages and impose some more order on them. Because things in EVE often have silly mythological names, I'm calling this project Kvasir.

Progress

  • 2022-01-25 surveying what's needed and working out where to start
  • 2022-01-26 I think I have a bird's-eye-view of what might be needed now! Planning to start with section 2 below, the general teaching pages.
  • 2022-01-27 Logged first merge proposal, for the scheduling page.
  • 2022-01-29 Logged merge proposal for Joining the faculty.
  • 2022-01-31 Enacted merge of the scheduling page into the general 'teaching classes at...' page
  • 2022-02-01 "Teaching classes" page moved to the much less confusing title "Good teaching guide", and also reworked.
  • 2022-02-01 "Joining the faculty" page merged with the general "teaching classes at..." page.
  • 2022-02-03 "Attending classes" general copy-edit and clarification. Further changes to come re: etiquette and AA.
  • 2022-02-03 Flagged syllabus template for deletion.

Teaching pages which need TLC

The recordings library

https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/EVE_University_Class_Library.

As Marek has remarked to me, and as I see has been discussed by the dept before, some of these recordings might now be beyond our reach. Then, as a separate problem, some of them are old enough that it's probably best that people not listen to them (the recording of me doing 'Minmatar Ships 102' in *2010* now contains some very out-of-date info!). On the other hand, some might be worth retaining, perhaps especially if they are broader more meta-game-y things. The page could also do with some general cleanup and copy-editing. (Anidien: Start categorizing listings on the page into three categories - Special Guest topics, core mechanics classes, and not-sure. Do this without listening to them, assigning them as "not-sure" if it would take a listen to assign between the other two categories. Special Guest topics should be special guest lectures that address more of the meta of the game than the core mechanics (g.e. null sec politics guest lectures). Think preserving special lecture history versus classes that simply explained the mechanics of the game as they were at the time of the recording. Don't worry about making these marks on the class library page itself - more of a tabulation outside the wiki, that we can discuss later.)

Core teaching info pages

Copy-edit

Move

  • https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/List_of_EVE_University_teachers (We no longer use the teacher title in this way. Move professors to new professors page (like the record of CCI completions) and cleanse the rest) (Marek: we'd have to discuss this, honoring our professors is nice, but also feels a bit masturbatory as all professor are of the teaching staff... CCI is something everyone can achieve, professor is not...) (Anidien: I'm with Marek here - the list of recipients can be found in game, through the Corporation interface. Can't simply delete the page, so looking for new options on how to deal with this.)

Retire

(Anidien: I'm going to discuss syllabi with Wiki Mgr one more time, to see if there's a valid argument for retention of all of this out of date info. Later Note: Can't simply delete. Need another plan - concern is that the syllabus template and all the syllabi need to be archived, but need to solve for a means of turning off search hits for external search tools AND internal search tools, when pages we can't/shouldn't edit (e.g. user pages) still link to the archived page).

Uncertain

  • https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Editing_and_uploading_class_recordings (do we still do this?) (Marek: We are not doing this right now, but with the renewal of the class library, we might want to start again, in which case this article probably could use a few updates, because the images look hella old, which suggests to me that the suggested programs to use are now probably different..?)
  • https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Category:Teaching_Resources (further investigation and listing needed) (Marek: When we tie all "our" articles together with a neat Navbar, we won't need this category anymore, then again, why not put all the pages we'll end up with on here?)

There's a fair bit of redundancy across some of these, and I think there's probably a good case for merging some of them. And again more general clean-up and editing wouldn't go to waste. Observation: 'Classes' and 'Syllabi' subcategories seem to contain suspiciously similar sets of things.

It'd be great for those classes that remain to have a little shared links sidebar like the {{Weapon Systems Links}} one.

Deprecated class syllabi

A lot of these are still kicking around on the wiki. They are perhaps a less immediate problem, but we could consider whether some or all could be gently removed--as they can still turn up in Google results &c. Or, a less invasive option, we could make the deprecated class box that appears at the top of each of these more prominent and more warning-coloured.

(Anidien: See comment in retire section - going to discuss syllabi with Wiki Mgr to see if there's a strong argument for retention. I'd argue the pages fall in our department and are our call to delete or not - but hasty application of fire to the pages may create unintended work for curators. Later note: can't delete. Looking for non-delete solutions that remove the pages from being found via internal or external search tools, or a network of links.).
