The Archon is the Amarr carrier. Formerly in possession of the strongest remote repair abilities of any vessel, the role of the Archon (and carriers in general) has shifted from logistics to mobile long-range damage-dealing in April of 2016. Although it has an extremely durable armor tank thanks to its resistance bonus, the Archon is mostly overlooked in favor of the Thanatos for both PVP and PVE due to its smaller fighter hangar and lower fighter damage, since carriers usually engage well out of weapon range of enemy ships.
The Archon is the Amarr carrier. Although it has an extremely durable armor tank thanks to its resistance bonus, the Archon is mostly overlooked in favor of the other armor carrier, the Thanatos, for both PvP and PvE. This is because the Archon has a smaller fighter hangar and lower fighter damage, and carriers usually engage well out of weapon range of enemy ships.

In former days the Archon was also used in the "Slowcat" doctrine, similar to the concept of Remote Rep Dominixes or other drone ships like Prophecies or Vexors. This is no longer possible since the base armor hit points repaired by capital armor repairers was cut by roughly half, among other reasons.

The Archon was the top-tier triage carrier by a pretty large margin. This was the case primarily due to its enormous tank, buffed by its armor resistance bonus, its generous capacitor, and the fact that when a carrier is in triage it won't have its fighters out anyway.

After the citadel release the Archon has lost it's triage role and is now equipped with new fighter squadrons.
''Archon'' (''ἄρχων'') was the ancient Greek word for "ruler" (it's related to the modern English words "patriarchy" and "matriarchy"). But given the tendency of Amarr ship names to draw from specifically religious words, the Archon's name might come from the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archon_(Gnosticism) Archons], powerful beings in the cosmology of Gnosticism and Manicheanism.
