===Mining Permits===
Often associated with a group known as "The CODE." this is another simple scam.  They offer a permit to you, for 10,000,000 ISK as an example. for one year's worth of gank-free mining.  Some claim these permits are honored but there is no facility for tracking who has or hasn't got a permit.  Groups like this claim to be making Hi Sec "better" by using a form of role-play to enforce against AFK mining (or other AFK activities).  The long and short of it is that if someone is going to gank you in your mining ship they're going to gank you.  Buying a permit does nothing other than transfer ISK to the other person's wallet.
====What you see====
A flashie shows up on grid while you're mining.  Chances are they'll simply gank you and then open a discussion about you not having a permit.
====How it works====
They prey upon your fears of continually being ganked while mining, as miners are often seen as combat/PvP adverse.  You're asked to pay an annual fee to the ganker who then promises that you'll be left alone to mine in peace, and possibly, not to mine AFK.  They often get a lot of laughs since many victims at first tend to pay a large bounty on the ganker.
This also applies to any other sort of permit or ransom.  Once you transfer someone ISK then it's gone.  There is no mechanism that holds them to stay true to their word.  For example, an Awoxer infiltrates a small mining corp.  They begin to awox.  They let it be known that if a large sum of ISK is paid to them they'll leave the corp.  Often the costs of reforming a new corp is much less, especially if the target corp is having trouble booting the awoxer.

===The Margin Trading Scam===
===The Margin Trading Scam===
''The Margin Trading Scam'' exploits the mechanic where a character with the Margin Trading skill can place buy orders and only place a portion of the ISK in escrow. If they then transfer all of their ISK away, the order will fail when someone tries to sell to it, essentially allowing them to make a ''fake'' buy order. It is also known as ''The Drunken Buy Order'' because it is often announced in local that a player must have been drunk when they placed a buy order. There are a couple of variations, but they all depend on margin buy orders failing and/or upon the victim not knowing the true value of the item they're trading.

===Sale of intangibles===
===Sale of intangibles===
This is the epic tale of selling someone the Golden Gate bridge: someone's selling something that either has no worth, is not verifiable, or simply does not belong to them. For example selling a bookmark to a wormhole with any kind of assurance of what is or is not in there (in terms of sites to run as well as presence of a hostile corporation inside). Another example would be ransoming your ship and pod for the assurance that they'll let you go, then destroying you anyway.<br>

====Mining Permits====
Mining permits get special mention because they're part an organized effort. The ''New Order of Highsec'' claims "sovereignty" over all of high security space, and requires that miners purchase a mining permit from them and conform to a standard of behavior, otherwise they will kill you.

====What you see====
Either someone will talk to you in chat about the mining permit, or they may just attack you without warning.

====How it works====
This is a fairly standard protection racket form of the sale of intangibles, combined with piracy and no small amount of role playing. As with all of the scams of this type, it rests on there being no in-game mechanism to enforce the agreement.

This is true of any sort of permit or ransom.  Once you transfer someone ISK it's gone.
