There are a number of classifications of space in Eve, listed below for reference.

Known Space

Known space, also known as 'K-space' and 'normal space', is the classification of space which includes Empire and NullSec, both separately split into different classifications. Any solar system that has at least one Stargate is part of known space.

Empire

Empire space is the name given to the regions which the major NPC factions have sovereignty for. This is further split into High Security space and Low Security space, along with security levels providing further gradation.

In empire space, whether high or low security, stealth bombers can't use bombs and players cannot deploy bubbles.

HiSec

High Security space, security level 1.0 to 0.5, CONCORD will react to hostile actions between pilots, with the response time ranging from almost instant in 1.0 space to up to 10 seconds in 0.5 space.

Regions which are primarily HiSec:

LoSec

In Low Security space, security level 0.4 to 0.1, CONCORD will not react to hostile actions between pilots, but any sentry guns around stargates and stations will open fire on the aggressive party and unprovoked attacks will cause losses of security status.

Regions which are primarily LoSec:

NullSec

Concord doesn't care what happens in nullsec and there are no gate or station guns and no security status losses for unprovoked attacks. In nullsec the gloves are off: stealth bombers can use bombs and players can deploy bubbles; players frequently fly under not-blue-shoot-it ('NBSI') rules of engagement, though the University does not.

NPC NullSec

NPC NullSec is null-security space where the sovereignty is claimed by NPC factions, similar to normal 'Empire' space, therefore cannot be claimed by capsuleer alliances.

Regions classified as NPC NullSec:

University pilots are allowed to enter Curse, the Great Wildlands, Syndicate and Outer Ring. Unfortunately Stain and Venal cannot be accessed without trespassing on other players' sovereign space (see below).

Claimable NullSec

In the rest of nullsec sovereignty is claimed (or contested!) by capsuleer alliances. Any stations in claimable nullsec will be player-owned and will usually only allow their owners' allies to dock. University pilots are not allowed to enter claimable nullsec, as this would break our commitment to neutrality.

W-space

Wormhole space, or W-space is the name given to systems only accessible through wormholes. These systems are not interconnected through stargates, and no stations are available in them. On top of this, wormholes can also contain 'anomalies' which adjust various statistics on your ship.

In terms of security mechanics, w-space is similar to nullsec: Concord does not monitor what happens in wormhole pockets, and players can use bombs and bubbles at will.
