EVE Online's tutorial (or New Player Experience, or even The Seekers Investigation) is a story-driven experience which introduces you to the very basics of playing EVE, especially as it pertains to piloting and Player vs. Environment (PvE) combat in space. Unless you're a returning player, it is recommended that you follow this tutorial as the game has many particular mechanics which are unique among most computer games and MMO's. This version of the tutorial was deployed in Aug 2018, replacing the previous one. The tutorial is currently available to all characters and each operation within it can be repeated infinitely, however bounties and operation rewards will only be paid out for the first completion, and loot is of negligible value (when it even exists)
In this article, we will provide an overview of what the New Player Experience teaches, what it does not teach, and what you will be up against for each of the operations contained within it.
Differences from normal game play
As with most video games, the tutorial is designed first and foremost to teach you the basic skills of the game, and is not focused upon survival or being true to what you will experience in normal game play.
The first notable difference is that the tutorial is comprised of a strict sequence of "operations" rather than random missions. In normal EVE game play, with the exception of epic arcs, you acquire missions by locating and talking to an agent who will assign you a random mission from a pool of missions that they have available based on several factors. Secondly, the tutorial operations are infinitely repeatable, any time you'd like. In normal game play, you may be given the same mission more than once and complete it more than once, but it depends entirely upon the random assignment from the agents, it is not by your choice.
Another notable difference is that you will face a wide variety of enemy ship classes and should have little trouble facing them even in your new-player corvette. In the tutorial, the ship classes you face don't seem to have a very large impact on how much damage it takes to kill them - typically, you will need larger ships to easily kill larger ships (while a Frigate can kill a Battleship normally, it is not typically quite so easy as it is in the tutorial)
Other differences:
- Payouts show up as operation bonuses in wallet, rather than mission rewards
- Rewards for some operations come in the form of a skill that is injected and/or trained up automatically for you. Typically, you may receive skill books as loot or rewards, but would have to inject them yourself and train them over time.
- With only a few exceptions, the only loot provided is in the form of metal scraps. This is not uncommon in normal play for drone type enemies (which is what you face in the tutorial), but typically enemies will drop a wide variety of loot. (Note: the tutorial does not teach you how to loot, and the loot available from it is without any significant value)
- In some particular cases, the tutorial will specifically point at an objective with a special box. This does not happen anywhere else in the game.
- Aura (the tutorial AI) exists only for the purpose of the tutorial. You will not find her elsewhere.
- The Seekers Investigation is the only entry in The Agency that can be removed from displaying in it.
- There are no standings to be gained/lost in the tutorial. This is normal for fighting drones, but killing most other types of NPC's will affect your standings with their faction, and completing a mission for an agent will normally increase your standings with that agent and their corp.
Introduction
When you first log in to the game as a new character, you will find yourself already in space in a corvette of your character's faction. Aura notifies you that a nearby research ship is under attack from Seeker drones and recommends that you attempt to rescue them.
Once you click "Continue" you find that you are too late. The research ship has been destroyed, but you may be able to recover the data.
Throughout the rest of this objective, Aura will teach you the following basic controls of the game:
- Moving the camera
- Selecting an object in space
- Approaching an object/enemy
- Orbiting an object/enemy
- Targeting an object/enemy
- Shooting a target

When you have destroyed the enemy, you will then be tasked with docking at a nearby NPC Station.
Once you have docked, Aura introduces you to the Agency window as the primary tool to discover opportunities available in New Eden. She asks you to open the Agency window and select The Seekers Investigation and activate the first task.
The Seekers Investigation
The Seekers Investigation is a branching tree of objectives that progress the player through learning the basic concepts of combat in Eve. Each step along the "trunk" teaches the player a new concept. Upon completion of the trunk objective, two additional "branches" are provided to give the player an opportunity to practice their new skill, and a new trunk objective also opens up. The branching objectives can be skipped in favor of completing only the trunk objectives, but doing so gives up a decent amount of income and a relatively safe way to practice skills.

Conclusion
Notes for experienced players
- Some structures can be destroyed, but provide no loot. In "Sleeping Menace" for example, four of the structures were destructible (with 200,000 health each) but provided no loot.
- The wrecks can be salvaged, but provide only the lowest-value salvage.
- The objectives can be repeated indefinitely, but provide no payouts or other rewards past the first completion.
