ORE Basic Ship and Skill Overview
Template:UwcThis guide provides general information and recommendations for T1 ships of a single player faction.
For more advanced and in-depth information on specific ships refer to EVE ships. This guide simply gathers the characteristics and overview of racial lineups in an easy to browse format for the very new player.
Fitting Overview
For more in-depth discussion of the purpose and use of some specific ORE ships, please see the Mining Ships and Orca pages.
With the introduction of the Ore Hold (in Inferno 1.2) to Mining Barges and Exhumers, the Expanded Cargohold modules and Cargohold Optimization rigs of past fits are no longer beneficial. The Ore Hold cannot be increased by modules or rigs (only skills).
Warrior drones are suggested since Aldrat's local rats are Angels. You will probably want to swap these for rat specific drones in other regions.
Skills
Required skills for ORE ships vary depending on the ship class. All mining-related ships require Mining Barge and Astrogeology to some level, though, and the Orca and Rorqual require leadership skills in order to give bonuses. The Primae does not require any skills to pilot, but the Noctis will require a new skill: ORE Industrial, which is available at the npc seeded price of 1.6 million at all stations that sell skillbooks.
Most ORE ships (with the notable exceptions of the Orca and Rorqual) are shield tanked. For hisec mining around Aldrat, you'll only need a tank with some decent EHP and 5 or 6 peak DPS, along with decent drone skills, in order to keep the rats away. Launch the drones when you arrive in the belt and set them to aggressive to make sure they attack rats as soon as possible; but if you don't have a few levels in Drone Durability then you'll need to keep an eye on your drone window to see if any of them are taking damage and pull in the ones that are.
The Orca and Rorqual are also shield tanked, but most of their EHP comes from a large hull buffer that is greatly extended by fitting a DCU2.
Mining Frigate
Venture
The Venture is the first ORE ship almost any aspiring miner will fly. It only requires the Mining Frigate skill, which can be injected by any newly created character, to operate, thus providing a viable mining ship with a low barrier of entry. Its two built-in warp core stabilizers also make the Venture a good ship for mining in hostile space. The Venture also carries an unique bonus to Gas Harvesting, making it the ship of choice for such purposes.

Mining Frigate bonuses (per skill level): Recognizing the dire need for a ship capable of fast operation in unsafe territories, ORE created the Venture. It was conceived as a vessel primed and ready for any capsuleer, no matter how new to the dangers of New Eden they might be, who wishes to engage in the respectable trade of mining. The Venture has amazing abilities to quickly drill through to the ores and gases it's after, harvesting them at the speed necessary for mining in hostile space, and getting out relatively unscathed. |

Mining Barge
Mining barges are the first level of ORE mining ships. There are three mining barges, each optimized for a different role.
Procurer
Since the Inferno 1.2 patch, the Procurer has become a very respectable mining ship due to its combination of decent yield, good ore hold, great tank, and low cost. The Procurer's ore hold is larger than a Covetor, smaller than a Retriever, but can still fit several cycles worth of ore. The Procurer's base mining yield is the lowest of all the ORE ships, but has been improved significantly to be on par with other ORE mining ships. The procurer's tank is beat only by its T2 varient, the Skiff. Using inexpensive modules, the procurer can reach enormous EHP while still maintaining a respectable yield and is thus the safest ship for mining in the lower-security (.6 or .5) areas of high security space.

- A buffer of 63,670 EHP against Antimatter makes suicide ganks against this ship extremely unprofitable.
- Even at maximum skills, the Procurer is still a slow ship at 113 m/s. Use of a bounce bookmark that is on grid with the asteroid belt is recommended.
- Two Hobgoblin I drones should be sufficient to dispatch all high-sec belt rats with ease. The EC-300 drones are added to provide further security against suicide ganking. If you have done nothing to make yourself a target, you can likely replace them with Mining Drone Is or further Hobgoblin Is.

- Note that this is done by removing the Survey Scanner module. As such, this fit is designed to work in small-scale mining fleets where a single ship uses a Survey Scanner to point out high-resource asteroids to the other miners.

- A bait fit, to trap low sec pirates looking for an easy prey.
- Make sure that you've got backup if you're jumped by multiple hostiles or by anything bigger than a destroyer.
- Usage: Mine in a Low-Sec belt. Wait until someone willing to take the bait arrives on grid. Warn your Backup, that they should align to you. Align out & bump an asteroid or make yourself look foolish doing something else. Get redboxed. Call for Backup. Yellowbox back. Ideally your opponent should be in web range - If he isn't simply point him. Your backup should arrive and end up with a nice killmail
- With all skills at V and before boosts, this ship has 67.3 K EHP, flies at 113 m/s and align in 9.4 s. The capacitor is stable.
- Damage is 99 dps at 60 km with the Hogoblins II drones.
Covetor
The Covetor has the greatest mining yield out of the T1 mining barges, but has the smallest ore hold and the least tank. As a result, you need support from another pilot to be effective at your role, as you waste the time saved mining trying to haul the ore back to your drop off point.
As Covetors are extremely easy to destroy in suicide gank attacks, using this ship without the possibility of storing it in an Orca's Ship Maintenance Bay when attacked might be unwise.

- Due to the extreme ease of suicide ganking Covetors, this ship should only be used while in range of an Orca in order to use the Ship Maintenance Bay for protection.
- This is a good point to train for T2 Strip Miners, which add a significant boost to your mining output but require more management and capacitor skills.
- With no capacitor skills, you'll only just have enough capacitor to start all three strip miners at once, and only with hisec ore crystals. This can cause problems especially if you want to start mining just after coming out of warp, and training a couple of capacitor skills at this point is recommended.
- The Cargohold Optimisation rigs of past fits are no longer beneficial to the Ore Hold (introduced in Inferno 1.2). Rig slots are now available for other purposes.
Retriever
The Retriever has the largest ore hold out of the T1 mining barges, but has a middling yield and only slightly more tank than the Covetor. If you are mining without support in higher-security areas (.7 and above), the Retriever is the ship of choice as its slightly lower yield is offset by vastly reducing the number of ore drop-off runs that need to be made.

- This Retriever fit will allow for the fastest possible ice harvesting, exceeding that of the Procurer thanks to the third Ice Harvester Upgrade in the low slot. This fit also meets or exceeds the production of a Covetor unless your Mining Barge skill is IV or higher. Given the large ore bay, this fit is ideal for solo ice mining.
- Relatively modest fitting skills are required; CPU management IV is sufficient. CPU rig is required even with CPU Management V unless 3% CPU implants are used. Defensive drones to taste and skill. Mining drones do not work with ice mining.

Exhumer
Exhumers are the T2 versions of Mining Barges, and all three are direct upgrades from their T1 counterparts. All of them require the Exhumers skill to operate.
Skiff
Being the T2 version of the Procurer, the Skiff naturally has the most impressive tank out of the three Exhumers by quite a large margin, being able to achieve battleship-level EHP with proper fitting. Its higher speed also allows it to effectively use Afterburner modules to further complicate matters for any would-be gankers. If you wish to safely mine in lower-security regions of high security space (.5 and .6 security), the Skiff is the ship of choice.

Hulk
Being the T2 version of the Covetor, the Hulk impresses with the highest yield of all the Exhumers and little else. Its tank is nothing to write home about, with even the most heavily tanked fits succumbing to two dedicated Catalyst pilots. When mining unsupported, the increased number of ore drop-off runs, caused by Hulk's comparatively small ore hold that after a mere five minutes of mining, will also likely offset any yield gains made compared to its cousins. While in a fleet with a trustworthy Orca pilot, however, all of the Hulk's disadvantages are negated through the Ship Maintenance Bay's near-perfect anti-gank protection and the fleet hangar's convenient ore storage, making it the T2 barge of choice for use in medium-to-large-scale fleet mining operations.

Mackinaw
As the T2 upgrade to the Retriever, the Mackinaw sports an impressively sized ore hold, yield that is only slightly below that of the Hulk, and a rather flimsy tank when contrasted to its price tag. The latter attribute has led to the Mackinaw being a very common target for suicide ganks, thus making unsupported use outside of .7 security or above unwise.

Industrial
Primae
The Primae was a free ship given out along with the Tyrannis expansion. While it can be useful if the player doesn't have another industrial ship available, it is generally thought of as too specialized and an easy target for gankers.

Has a bay for holding Planetary Commodities. The Primae is a repurposed ORE design intended to ease the task of extracting resources from planetbound environments. Initially devised as a deep space salvage vessel for large-scale ore retrieval from destroyed ORE fleets in pirate-occupied areas, its previous incarnation was made all but obsolete by the arrival of capsuleers on the interstellar scene. Realizing that the ship could, with a few minor modifications, be made into an efficient resource harvesting aid, ORE wasted no time in revamping the design. |

Noctis
The Noctis is an ORE ship released with the first part of the "Incursion" expansion in November 2010. It requires the skillbook "Ore Industrial" to fly and blueprints are available at ORE stations in the Outer Ring Region. While generally an excellent salvage ship, the Noctis' baseline tank suffers quite noticably when contrasted with its price, especially when fit with Cargohold Expanders.

Industrial Command Ships
Orca
The Orca is a command ship designed to support mining fleets, but can be fill many support roles due to its large cargoholds and ship maintenance bay. By making its Ship Maintenance Bay accessible to fleet members, it can also provide near-perfect protection against suicide ganks to any mining ship within range.

Industrial Command Ships bonuses (per skill level): The Orca was developed as a joint venture between Outer Ring Excavations and Deep Core Mining Inc as a vessel to help meet the demands of New Eden's industry and provide a flexible platform from which mining operations can be more easily managed. The Orca is also capable of using a large industrial core to substantially increase its industrial capabilities, while empowering its defenses during deployment in a static configuration. A key element of the industrial capacity unlocked by activating an industrial core is the ability to use compressor modules, with the Orca having the flexibility to use a number of specialized large compressors. The Orca uses much of the technology developed by ORE for the Rorqual and integrated with the latest advancements from Deep Core Mining research division has developed a vessel which offers a diverse role to all sizes of operations and needs. |

The Rorqual is a capital version of the Orca, and is generally only seen in nullsec. As well as fielding similar bonuses to the Orca, it can carry a mining fleet to their destination and compress ore to make it easier to haul. Often, though, the Rorqual is seen as too risky to deploy in an asteroid belt and is set up within a POS shield instead; miners still get the bonuses and ore compression, and most pilots see this as a worthwhile tradeoff.

Capital Industrial Ships bonuses (per skill level): The Rorqual was conceived and designed by Outer Ring Excavations in response to a growing need for capital industry platforms with the ability to support and sustain large-scale mining operations in uninhabited areas of space. The Rorqual is notably capable of using a capital industrial core to substantially increase its industrial capabilities, while empowering its defenses during deployment in a static configuration. A key element of the industrial capacity unlocked by activating an industrial core is the ability to use compressor modules, with the Rorqual able to use the powerful and logistically impressive capital compressors. Additionally, the Rorqual is able to fit a capital tractor beam unit, capable of pulling in cargo containers from far greater distances and at far greater speeds than smaller beams can. It also possesses a sizeable drone bay, jump drive capability and the capacity to fit a clone vat bay. This combination of elements makes the Rorqual the ideal nexus to build deep space mining operations around. Due to its specialization towards industrial operations, its ship maintenance bay is able to accommodate only industrial ships, mining barges and their tech 2 variants. |
