Skill training |
Scanner alts are alts that have been trained for scanning and/or exploration. The benefit of training a scanner alt varies depending on use-case, but training a perfect scanner can take 157 days from fresh character to fully trained using neural remaps and +3 implants. As such, training your main character to be a perfect scanner may not be the best use of your training time. This guide is broken into three tiers of scanner:
- Basic scanner: Alpha exploration, seeding, and emergency backup scanner
- Exploration scanner: exploration, scanning down a chain
- This plan assumes your character is on an Omega account
- Perfect scanner: scanning down wormhole chains quickly and efficiently, combat scanning
- This plan assumes your character is on an Omega account
Preparation
Creating a character in any empire is fine as all the T2 scanning ships are more than adequate. The issue comes down to personal preference and how efficient you want your character to be. Regardless of starting empire faction, perfect scanners might benefit from training into the Buzzard or Magnate as these two get bonuses to scanning-related stats. The Buzzard is a favorite because of its generous 5 mid slots which allows it to fit extra scanning equipment. If you're trying to do exploration quickly for ISK, training into a Cheetah may be worthwhile as the fastest of the four. The Helios is the slowest, but makes up for it by being well-rounded with generous mid slots and tank.
Note that only the basic scanner skill plan and exploration skill plan have exploration skills in their skill plans. A perfect scanner can add exploration skills to the queue, but generally a perfect scanner is not needed for exploration.
Pause Training
If you are creating an alt on an account with other characters, it is important to note that only one character can be training skills at a time. Attempting to add skills to the training queue will result in an error, so you will need to pause training on your currently training character, or activate Multiple Character Training.
Neural Remap
For basic scanner skill plan, no neural remap is required.
For exploration scanner skill plan, you may wish to remap to Intelligence-Memory after training ship and navigation skills.
The perfect scanner will require all three neural remaps for efficiency.
Implants
All characters start with Cybernetics I which allows the use of +3 implants. This will greatly improve your train time. If all you're going to train the alt for is as a scanner, you don't need the Social Adaptation Chip - Basic (Slot 5) as none of the skills in these plans have Charisma as a primary or secondary attribute.
Basic scanner
No neural remap for the basic scanner plan. This skill plan is intended for Alpha clone characters who wish to get into exploration, seed alts, and emergency backup scanners. Seed alts are alts that have been trained with just enough scanning proficiency that they can be safe-logged in a wormhole system for later use to log in and either spy on the activity of the people living there or scan a way for an eviction fleet to get inside.
Use the skill plan appropriate to the empire faction of the character. Below that is the skills you can add to make your scanner capable of Alpha-level exploration.

Perfect Scanner
The perfect scanner is designed to have perfect scanning skills. It is widely used by people who live in wormholes, but it is not required for those wishing to wormhole dive for gas, ore, or combat anomalies. Perfect scanning skills significantly reduce the amount of time spent scanning down cosmic signatures. By the rule 80-20, that being that it is generally a good idea to put in 20% effort where it yields 80% benefit, this skill plan is only intended for wormholers and combat scanners who need to scan down things on a daily basis.
The skill plan has been broken up by remaps [*]Intelligence-Memory for support, scanning, and tank skills [*]Intelligence-Perception for navigation skills [*]Memory-Perception for ship skills
Additionally, there are two different Int-Mem skill plans: one for armor tank, one for shield tank. There are four different Mem-Per skill plans based on which scanning ship you intend to train into.
