When choosing that first activity make sure it is something you enjoy doing otherwise why play this game, it does not have to be the most efficient thing you can do, but if you don't like doing it you won't like playing EVE. The same applies to a lesser extent to your ISK making activity, generally it's not going to be the most enjoyable thing long term, and may end up feeling like a bit of a grind, but make sure it's something that you don't dislike. Another thing to consider is that EVE Online has lots of opportunities, so don't be afraid to jump from one activity to another. (That said, EVE online is huge so don't try to master everything at once, there will be plenty of time for that as you progress in the game.)
