Essentially a pared-down version of its big brother the Hel, the Nidhoggur nonetheless displays the same austerity of vision evident in its sibling. Quite purposefully created for nothing less than all-out warfare, and quite comfortable with that fact, the Nidhoggur will no doubt find itself a mainstay on many a battlefield.

Summary

The Nidhoggur is the Minmatar carrier. Its fighter damage bonus makes it a popular choice for PvE. In that regard, it competes with the Thanatos which has the same damage bonus. In PvE its advantage over the Thanatos is the additional mid slot which is more valuable than a lowslot due to such modules as drone navs, omidirectional tracking links, or sensor boosters. The fighter HP bonus of the Thanatos is usually valued higher than the Nidhoggur's speed bonus though. Thus it mostly comes down to taste.

In PvP a shield tanked Nidhouggur can put out a good amount of damage for a carrier. But in many PvP situations fighter health, speed, and application as well as neuting capabilities are more important than raw damage. The shield tank in the mids then gets in the way to increase fighter speed and application. Thus Nidhoggur fighters are usually slower than Thanatos fighters. It is also possible to armor tank a Niddhoggur for PvP. This obviously opens up a lot of mid slots. But the Thanatos is usually still preferred due to its fighter health bonus.

Notes

In Norse mythology, Nidhoggur was a serpent under the world who gnawed on the roots of Yggdrasil, the world-tree, and (in some accounts) also gnawed on the evil-doers condemned in the afterlife to Náströnd, a kind of underworld for especially heinous criminals. Nidhoggur is an Anglicization of Old Norse Níðhǫggr.
