In typical SoCT fashion, the Metamorphosis has a balanced module fitting layout and is capable of using a wide variety of weapons and equipment for its class. While by no means as potent as the Gnosis- and Praxis-class vessels, this handy little frigate is a remarkable transformation of the hull it is based on into an agile and swift option for explorers. Summary
The Metamorphosis is the Society of Conscious Thought frigate introduced as a login award for Capsuleer Day XX. This ship has a bounty of bonuses, such as 100% bonuses to Small Energy Turret, Small Hybrid Turret, Small Projectile Turret, Light Missile, and Rocket damage. Additionally, it offers a 50% bonus to Drone hit points, a +2 bonus to ship warp core strength, a 100% reduction in Cloaking Device, Probe Launcher, Relic Analyzer, and Data Analyzer CPU requirements, and a 37.5% reduction in Core Scanner Probe scan deviation. It also has all the role bonuses of an Astero, namely a 37.5% bonus to Core and Combat Scanner Probe strength, as well as a +10 bonus to Relic and Data Analyzer virus strength. Notably, the ship features a Mobile Depot Bay capable of carrying any of the three types of Mobile Depots. The Metamorphosis and the Astero are the only Tech 1 frigate hulls that can fit a Covert Ops cloak and warp while cloaked.
The Metamorphosis is primarily designed as a stealthy exploration ship, with a specific focus on extended operations away from stations. It can be easily outfitted for either exploration or PvP purposes at any time by deploying a Mobile Depot from the Mobile Depot bay. With the hard points for a turret and a launcher, drone hit point bonus, and a cloaking ability that empowers it to initiate fights at its choosing, this hull is particularly effective for engaging other explorers outside of high-security space. However, it comes at a significantly higher cost than a Tech 1 exploration frigate, and even surpasses the price of a Tech 2 Covert Ops frigate. Nevertheless, all the ship’s bonuses are role-based, and any pilot with Spaceship Command I can fly the ship, making it a suitable alternative to the Astero without the same expenses or skill requirements.
Thanks to its 100% reduction in CPU requirements for Probe Launchers, the Metamorphosis has the necessary fitting capacity to serve as a cloaking, probing scout for PvP. It doesn't necessitate fitting compromises to accommodate the expanded probe launcher required for using combat probes, unlike the Astero.
Skills
- The only skill required to fly the Metamorphosis is Spaceship Command I.
- To be successful flying the ship, especially for exploration, there are some skills that really should be trained sufficiently.
- It is essential to train Cloaking to IV in order to use the Covert Ops Cloaking Device II.
- Astrometrics IV, Astrometric Acquisition III, Astrometric Pinpointing III and Astrometric Rangefinding III make a good skills base for scanning.
- If you intend to develop long term scouting skills, which will require fast accurate scans in a ship that's so nimble it warps almost instantly, it will become essential to train the Covops and Astrometric scanning skills to V.
Tactics
Metamorphosis serve as an exploration focused alternative to Astero with better scanning hull bonus rivaling Buzzard and Anathema at Covert Op IV skill. The lack of mid and low slots causes fitting issues for Metamorphosis hence it is rarely used as a hunter ship. Metamorphosis serve as an easy access to +10 virus strength at a cheaper price compared to the Astero, and with 0 skill requirement, alpha characters are able to fly them at full capability on day 1.
Metamorphosis have the pros and cons of an Astero which can be summarized as:
- Sub 2 seconds warp capable
- Can use Covert Op Cloak (Omega)
- Unable to fit Interdiction Nullifier
Metamorphosis have one more edge against the Astero, which is its 0 CPU requirement for Probe Launchers. This extends to Extended Probe Launcher which has very high CPU cost that causes fitting problems for Astero and other Covert Op ships, making Metamorphosis one of the best Combat Prober in the game once you factor in the hull bonuses. It is an amazing scanner with suboptimal hunting capability, making it popular as a pure scanner in Wormholes, while trading off anti-bubble capability of a Buzzard or Anathema with its Sub-2 warp capability
Notes
While the ship has a mobile depot bay, returning the mobile depot requires scooping the mobile depot into the cargo bay first before dragging it to the mobile depot bay. If the ship lacks the required cargo space, the pilot will need to jettison (jet can) enough cargo to make space for the mobile depot, scoop the depot, move it to the mobile depot bay, and then recover the cargo from the jet can.
