The Chimera's design is based upon the Kairiola, a vessel holding tremendous historical significance for the Caldari. Initially a water freighter, the Kairiola was refitted in the days of the Gallente-Caldari war to act as a fighter carrier during the orbital bombardment of Caldari Prime.
It was most famously flown by the legendary Admiral Yakia Tovil-Toba directly into Gallente Prime's atmosphere, where it fragmented and struck several key locations on the planet. This event, where the good Admiral gave his life, marked the culmination of a week's concentrated campaign of distraction which enabled the Caldari to evacuate their people from their besieged home planet. Where the Chimera roams, the Caldari remember.
The Chimera is capable of generating a Jump Conduit Portal which allows it to instantaneously transport itself and nearby fleet members to a target cynosural beacon. Ship classes that can be moved via conduit: Frigates, Destroyers, Cruisers, Battlecruisers, and Battleships.

Summary
The Chimera is the Caldari carrier. Formerly focused around providing remote repair to its supporting fleet, the Chimera (and other carriers) were rebalanced in the April 2016 release to become mobile long-range damage dealers. Despite possessing a powerful shield tank due to its passive resistance bonuses, the Chimera is usually superseded by the Nidhoggur in both PvP and PvE due to the Chimera's smaller fighter hangar and lesser fighter damage bonus. It does find a purpose, however, in providing Command Bursts to allied fleets, as its durability increases the chance of its survival.

Equinox expansion - Equinox in Focus: New Upwell Ships
- Carriers will now have the capability of using a Conduit jump to take 5-30 players in the jump tunnel with them. The Number of players which are passengers for the jump is increased by a new skill, Capital Jump Portal Generation, which increases the limit by 5 per level. This is built into Carriers and does not require a module to be fitted.
- Carriers will gain the ability to fit new capital sized versions of the Micro Jump Drive and the Micro Jump Drive Field Generator, both of these modules will require a new skill, Capital Micro Jump Drive Operation.
