Summary
The Griffin Navy Issue (GNI) is the Caldari EWAR faction frigate. Once a terror upon Faction Warfare with its ability to belt high damage while using Electronic Countermeasures to prevent its target from fighting back, a change in 2018 allowing jammed ships to target their jammer left the GNI as a worse Caldari Navy Hookbill in 1v1 scenarios. In 2020, after two years of neglect, it was reworked into a droneboat, but in a special form, as the only ship to receive bonuses specifically for ECM drones. Its newly expanded drone bay, matching the Tristan's, comes with severe penalties for drone damage and durability, both also unique traits. It is also the only ship to have a drone control range penalty, retaining the ECM range malus of the old GNI in a new fashion.
Skills
These skills will improve your EWAR effectiveness when flying a Griffin Navy Issue.
- Caldari Frigate - Affects both ECM effectiveness and hybrid turret damage, a lot.
- Long Range Targeting - 5% Bonus to targeting range per skill level. Requires CPU Management Level 2.
See the EWAR Guide and ECM Guide articles for more information.
Tactics
PvE - ECM is useless in older forms of PvE (introduced before circa-2015), and newer forms of PvE tend to have higher tank requirements than what a navy frigate can bear. This leaves the GNI as a generic hybrid damage dealer with 5 mids, a flock of low-damage drones (collectively with less damage than one regular drone), and a launcher slot. As such, it unlikely that the GNI will be a better fit than a Hookbill or Federation Navy Comet in the Caldari and Hybrid boat categories, respectively, for PvE. Not that either alternative are noted for their PvE prowess, either.
PvP - The newly expanded drone bay offers the GNI a return to the 1v1 FW menace role it once held, as a target jammed by your drones is unable to target you. Hornet EC-300s have a 5.5-7.5s jam duration (based on Caldari Frigate level), but with a 20s cycle duration. This limited uptime can be compensated for by repeatedly launching, engaging, and then returning the EC-300s. This process lets the drones attempt to jam more than the 20s cycle would otherwise let them. It also retains its ability to disrupt specific targets in smallgang engagements, though with weaker jams and brittle drones. Aside from that, typical hybrid turret frigate tactics apply. The GNI's 5 mids offer a bevy of range control options, letting you control range and either brawl (blasters) or scram/web kite (rails).
