Sensing the need for a more moderately-priced version of the Nyx, Federation Navy authorities commissioned the design of the Thanatos. Designed to act primarily as a fighter carrier for small- to mid-scale engagements, its significant defensive capabilities and specially-fitted fighter bays make it ideal for its intended purpose.
The Thanatos is capable of generating a Jump Conduit Portal which allows it to instantaneously transport itself and nearby fleet members to a target cynosural beacon. Ship classes that can be moved via conduit: Frigates, Destroyers, Cruisers, Battlecruisers, and Battleships.

Summary
The Thanatos is the Gallente carrier. Like the other carriers, the Thanatos was rebalanced in the April 2016 update to become a mobile long-range damage dealer with squadrons of launched fighters. Its 6 low slots allow the Thanatos to field a respectable armor tank, though not on par with the Archon. The Thanatos is popular in PvE due to its high fighter damage bonus, allowing players to quickly complete missions and combat anomalies. In PvP, the Thanatos reigns supreme as the standard armor carrier, as its larger fighter bay and more damaging, highly survivable fighters allot it the high damage expected from carriers.

Tactics
The Thanatos is often used for ratting NPCs in lowsec and nullsec space. For that reason, fleets that are large enough will often try an hunt a Thanatos if seen on D-scan. For that reason, the Thanatos is sometimes used as bait to lure in a fleet so that a larger or more capable fleet can then cyno in and destroy the fleet that has been successfully baited.
Notes
In ancient Greek mythology, Thanatos was a personification of death; the word itself (Θάνατος) was also simply the ancient Greek word for death in general. Some writers grouped Thanatos with other personifications of negative experiences and emotions as siblings, treating him as a brother of (among others) Eris, Moros, Nemesis and Charon; in some accounts, Thanatos was distinguished, as peaceful death, from the Keres, associated with violent death.

Equinox expansion - Equinox in Focus: New Upwell Ships
- Carriers will now have the capability of using a Conduit jump to take 5-30 players in the jump tunnel with them. The Number of players which are passengers for the jump is increased by a new skill, Capital Jump Portal Generation, which increases the limit by 5 per level. This is built into Carriers and does not require a module to be fitted.
- Carriers will gain the ability to fit new capital sized versions of the Micro Jump Drive and the Micro Jump Drive Field Generator, both of these modules will require a new skill, Capital Micro Jump Drive Operation.
